Dean's Disappearing Act

I always seem to be the one who needs rescuing, don't I? I do the "damsel in distress" thing oh so well, and 100% of the time I don't ask for it. Of course there were a couple of times that Sam was the one who needed saving. Dean, on the other hand, could handle his own. He NEVER needed our help. Granted there were a few times before I met the boys that Sam had to help save his brother from a number of different things, but since I had been with them Dean hadn't gotten into any trouble or danger. So imagine how Sam and I felt the day Dean decided to disappear on us. Our day started like any other, with the three of us debating on what to do for breakfast. We all agreed on heading out to the local diner, so we hopped into the car and went downtown. Breakfast was delicious, and talk was minimal (which was unusual for the three of us). Back at the hotel, Sam and I made ourselves comfortable on the couch and turned on the television. Dean picked his keys back up off the table and said, "I'm going out for a little while. You two behave while I'm gone." He winked at Sam and smiled before heading out the door. Neither Sam nor I thought anything of Dean's sudden decision to leave us. He had done this numerous times before, going for random drives to clear his head or to search for a bar with a pool table....whatever Dean was feeling up to at that time, he went and he did it. He's a grown man and he does whatever he wants, you know? The only thing I noticed about this particular outing was that Dean hadn't really spoken much that day. Usually he was the one who carried on conversation all day, starting with breakfast chit chat and ending with a little hunting story before we all passed out for the night. I turned to Sam and asked, "Do you think Dean's alright today?" Sam smiled at me and said, "Why would you even ask that, babe?" "I don't know," I said. "He's just usually so much more talkative than he was today. He didn't even talk at breakfast like he normally does." "I'm sure he's fine sweetie," Sam said. "We all have days like that, you know." Sam wasn't wrong. I had days where I wanted nothing to do with anyone. They didn't happen as often since I had been with the boys, but they happened just the same. "I guess you're right my love," I said as I smiled at him. I will spare you all the details, but you can probably imagine what happened next. Can you blame us, though? We were always with Dean or he was always in the room with us. Now we had some time to ourselves, so we had to take advantage. Besides, it's human nature and even the animals do it, so stop judging. Later that night, I cooked us a nice chicken noodle soup dinner. Sam had me go get comfortable on the couch again while he did the dishes. I got so comfortable that I wound up falling asleep. Sam picked me up and carried me to the bed, changed into more comfortable clothes, and snuggled up next to me. The next morning, I woke up before Sam and noticed that Dean still hadn't returned. Ok, now I was a little worried. Like I said earlier, Dean disappears from time to time to clear his head, but he is always home before we wake up. I gently nudged Sam. "Wake up baby," I said to him. Still a little sleepy, Sam said, "Huh, what? What's going on? Are you alright sweetie?" "It's not me I'm worried about," I said, pointing over to the empty bed next to us. Sam sat up faster than I have ever seen him do before. "Let's not panic," he said. "Maybe he came home while we were asleep, got up early, and is out getting breakfast." "Why don't you try calling his cell, just to be sure," I told him. "Good idea," Sam said, kissing my forehead. He reached for his phone and dialed Dean's number. "Damn," he said. "Straight to voice mail. This is very unlike him." "What do we do now?" I asked. "He has the only vehicle and we have no idea where he was going." "I'll call Cas," Sam replied. "Maybe he has seen or heard from Dean." Sam dialed a different set of numbers and waited for a response. "Sam?" I heard Castiel say from the other end. "Hi Cas," Sam said. "I was just wondering if you've seen or spoken to Dean at all recently?" "I talked to him about two days ago," Cas replied. "Is everything okay?" "Yes," Sam lied. "He just took off on one of his drives again and I can't get a hold of him, that's all." "Well if I hear from him, I will tell him to call you," Cas said. "I would appreciate that, Cas," Sam said. "Thanks." After he hung up with Castiel, he looked at me and said, "Something is off, sweetheart. Dean should have been back by now." "We'll find him," I promised. "Let's go see if we can find ourselves a ride. The sooner we get out there, the sooner we can bring Dean home."
