Today was the day. Moving day.
At least I already knew my neighbors. Well actually that's not a very good thing if one is them is Adam Herod.
Adam is one of those boys. Those boys that every girl loves. And sadly that included me. And I hated it. I hated that I loved him. I had loved him ever since I saw him at our new church. Ok well that's not exactly true. Actually when I first saw him, I practically hated him. I'm not really sure when it happened, or why but I do know that I seem to have this infinite love of him that can just never go away.
I grabbed a box and pulled it up to my new house.
The other houses on the col-de-sac were all decorated with fake cobwebs and supposedly "scary" decorations. For Halloween.
I hated that we moved on Halloween. I was supposed to go trick or treating with Bailey today. But I had to cancel.
I waited for my mom to open the door and stumbled in. It was a nice house. It was a four bedroom. But since my grandma was living with us my two brothers Mark and Luke had to share the biggest room.
I walked into my room and looked around. The walls were a sea green color. My bed, desk, dresser, and bookshelves were already set up. There were boxes everywhere. The walls were cool except they didn't match the zebra theme I had since I was five. At least now my mom had to let me change that childish theme.
I sat the box down and went out into our backyard. It was an acre with a pool. The backyard was my favorite part. The good thing about your stepdad owning his own pool designing company is that each house you get has a nice pool.
It was too cold to swim but the water fall was still running. I went out and walked along the thick grass. I ran to a large tree and hoisted myself up. I climbed until the branches were too thin to hold me up.
And then I looked over the fence into the next door neighbors yard. There yard was big too but without a pool. But they had a trampoline. And in it were two boys, Adam and Alex Herod. Adam was my age and Alex was in second grade. We all went to school at Firestone Christian Academy. I was in seventh grade.
Adam saw me and stopped jumping. He slided out of the trampoline and ran to the fence and pulled himself up. I hated that I instantly ran over there and did the same.
"Hey y'all are finally here!" He said. His brown eyes gleaned with excitement. His black hair was spiked as usual and he was wearing his usual Nike "Just Do It" shirt with basketball shorts and tennis shoes. He looked too cute.
"Uh yeah," I sighed
"Well we are coming over tomorrow night! To hang out or whatever. Where's your brother?" He asked.
"Um not sure. We just got back from my dad's," I tried to sound cool but being around him gave me butterflies. Like every other girl that has ever laid eyes on him.
"When do y'all go there like every month?" He asked carelessly.
"Uh it feels like it. Every other weekend," I said.
"Oh, what are you doing tonight for halloween?" He asked. His tan hands were so close to mine on the top of the fence. Of course I was too scared to do anything. I'm very brave until it comes to Adam. Then I'm a mess.
"Nothing. Moving ya know? Gotta unpack. Mom and Paul did most of the furniture stiff yesterday when we were gone its just the little stuff we have to take care of. What about you?" I explained.
"We are going to the carnival at the school. You should come." He suggested.
"No thanks we have stuff we gotta do." I refused.
"Whatever. I'll hang with Jefferey. Maybe even Hanna, if she'll let me." He winked. Stupid player boy. Hanna Steele is one of my best friends. And Adam and her used to have this weird thing between them. Now she says she's over him but everyone knows that you can't ever truly get over Adam.
"Kay well I'm gonna go get unpacked I guess I will see y'all tomorrow," I sighed and hopped down from the fence.
"I bet you will be counting down the minutes," Adam yelled from the other side of the fence.
I chuckled. Every girl might love Adam but none will love him as much as he loves himself.
And I walked torwards my new home. The start of something new. The start of a big change. After about an hour of setting up my little tv and hanging up some of my painting and shoving hundreds of YA Fiction books into my shelves, my grandma knocked on the door. I opened it and she hugged me in her small T-Rex arms.
"Hey Gammaw," I smiled.
"Hey Shelby," she said in her sweet voice," Do you want to go trick or treating with me and Mark?"
I hesitated. I was planning on being Tris from my favorite book Divergent again this year but my grandma probably wouldn't understand that costume and make me wear something else. And what else would I be? Plus my grandma's neighborhood doesnt have the best candy.
"Nah that's ok. I'm really tired I thunk I will fix up my bed and then crash but thanks anyways," I decided.
"You sure honey?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am," I replied.
"Ok well goodnight sweet girl," she waved a chubby white hand.
"Good night love you," I waved back.
"Love you too." I closed the door and looked in my mirror above my white dresser.
My light curly brown hair was up in a Ponytail and my side bangs were hanging out. My blue eyes looked slightly brighter in my new contacts. I sighed. I wasn't beautiful like Hanna with her dark hair and tan skin or Bailey with her blonde straight hair and hazel eyes. What would Adam Herod the king of the jocks ever see in me? Nothing that's what.
I pulled out my Android phone and turned on my music. The first song that played was "I'd Lie" by Taylor Swift. It was one of her older songs. But I loved it. I like songs I can relate to. This was he of them. It described me perfectly. And it described Adam. Except he was born on the 18th not the 17th. I sang along and put clothes in drawers.
Tonight was still alive but I couldn't help but wonder about tomorrow.
