                                                                                             3RD POV

David, Laya, Zari, and Jack all freeze. In that moment in time, they have no thoughts. No emotions. No sound. Nothing. Only one question, which rings through the space of the office, is prominent.

"Why?"

Ms. Smith's soft crying brings them back from the blankness of surprise. The news starts to make sense, making connections between the horrible words. The four friends then start to react, one by one.

Laya is the first, her eyes slowly filling with tears. "T-this isn't real..... It can't be. Em  didn't commit suicide. I-I was just talking to her last night....She's n-not dead!" Laya clutches her arms, and sobs. Torrents of tears flow done her face. Laya collapses into herself, leaning onto her twin David. David automatically wraps his arms around her, crying quietly himself.

The Bellair twins have known Emily for the longest out of the four. Meeting her in 1st grade, they became fast friends. David, Laya, and Emily moved through elementary, middle, and high school together, gaining and losing friends along the way. The twin's earliest memory Emily was protecting her from two bullies in 3rd grade. David and Laya were always protecting Emily, who in turn helped them through tough times. David, Laya, and Emily's friendship one for life. One that would continue into death.

Zari is the next to react, her face turning pale. She starts to shake in her spot. In one sudden movement, she springs up and off the couch where the friends were sitting. She shouts, "Em's not dead! She's still alive! Em would never kill herself! E-Em's still at school. Maybe she went into a coma! Or a-"

Ms. Smith shakes her head sadly. She picks up a tissue and dabs at her eyes. "No, she's dead. They called the ambulance, and she was pronounced dead on the scene."

Zari falls back on the couch, quickly losing her anger. Her shoulders shake with silent sobs, tears streaming down her face. Zari's head keeps shaking side to side, denying the news of Emily's death. She sniffles forcefully, trying to keep herself together.

Zari Paeria met Emily, David, and Laya in 6th grade. They had not seen eye-to-eye with the loud, rebellious person at first. One group project changed that, after which they had become fast friends. The four friends then did everything together, and Zari was grateful for their friendship. Emily, David, and Laya were there for her through her parents' divorce, their remarriages, and death of Zari's mother. Emily had been the one to first accept her, and pick her back up after an intense tennis game or depression bout. Emily was the only one who had seen Zari's fragile, vulnerable side. Without Emily by her side, Zari wasn't sure who she was going to talk to, or if she was going to find a friend like her.

Jack's reaction takes the longest. His head swam with the news. Jack was shell shocked. He looked at his friends crying. Then, the news of Emily's death hit him full force, and he nearly blacked out with the pain and agony of her death.

Jack Erwood had met Emily back in 3rd grade, but they didn't become friends till 7th. One look at the spunky girl waving and grinning widely , and he was in love. His little 8 year old self didn't realize that, and he merely thought Emily was cute. During those four years, Jack matured, and with it his sense of love. He went through phases of liking other people, but his attraction for Emily never faded. He couldn't get his confidence up to talk to her until he had made friends with David. Jack and Emily finally met, and friendship turned into crushes. At the end of their 7th grade year, they finally went out on a date. Emily and Jack had seen some tough times, but their love was undeniable. Even the teachers were charmed with the power couple, the love between Emily and Jack was that undeniable. Jack wasn't sure what he was going to do. They had planned everything, down to where they were going to live once they had gotten married. The girl Jack Erwood had loved for so long, most of his live really, was gone.

Jack's eyes filled with tears, and he stood up blindly.

Ms. Smith cautiously stood up. She had feared that Jack wouldn't take the news well, and her premonition was correct. "Jack? Please, calm d-"

Jack ran out of the room, slamming the door closed behind me. Laya, David, and Zari stared. Ms. Smith sighed, and wiped away the last of her tears. An unspoken agreement passed through the three friends as they looked at each other. They would leave him alone, and talk to him tomorrow. The remaining friends became quiet. Ms. Smith called their parents, and had them sent home. She went to find Jack.

Jack had been running. Where to, he didn't know. All he knew was to get away from that place, to get away from everything. The hot sun beams hit his back, his feet pounding steadily. Jack slowed down quickly. He had run to the clearing where Emily had said yes to the date. The place where their love took off and started. Falling to the ground, he started to scream. Pure hurt transformed into an anguished scream.

Jake's other half, his love, had died.

Killed herself.

He could have saved her.

Called her.

He should have seen Em was hurt.

Was he not good enough?

He would have helped her.

What if she was depressed because of him?

Could have, should of, would of.

What if?

Jack suddenly stopped. The forest surrounding the clearing was silent for a moment, then came to life with the sounds of animals and bugs.

"Jack?" Ms. Smith's voice reached his ears. The clearing wasn't that far, a few minutes walk from the school. "I called your parents, they'll pick you up now. I have your things..." She stayed out of the area, and held out her hands, carrying Jack's backpack. He got up, and mutely received his things. Ms. Smith led him back, and sent him off, back home. Jack stumbled up the stairs, obliovious to the consolations of his family. Locking the door, he fell on the bed. Jack fell asleep with a wet pillow and the sounds of his sobs.
