*Briella's POV*

When math class started, I was prepared for the test. Unlike a lot of people, I had really studied for this one. I was confident that I'd get a good grade.

So when Mrs. Blanchard handed out the test, I sped through it in a breeze. Every question was easy to answer, and I felt like I knew everything. For once.

I got done ten minutes before everyone else. So I took that time to check back over my answers and make sure I'd gotten them right. I had.

After class, Mrs. Blanchard collected the tests and told us she'd have our grades posted by tomorrow. I wasn't even slightly nervous as I left the classroom.

On the way out the door, I bumped into someone I didn't really know. He'd been in my class all semester, but I still didn't know his name.

"Sorry," we said at the same time. That was the end of that conversation. Maybe I should've said more, or at least laughed at the whole in-sync "I'm sorry," but I was in a hurry. I had to get to my next class!

*Nick's POV*

Things weren't the same after Copper died. It had only been a day, but everything was fresh on my mind and I couldn't focus during the math test. Surely I would get an awful grade, despite how much I'd studied.

On Sunday, right after my dog died, Dad got home. He called out to me to get out of the street, and I moved away quickly so he wouldn't run me over.

I took Copper to the shed and stored his dead body in there for awhile, just til I'd finished saying hi to my dad. Which shouldn't take long.

When I saw him, his eyes were bloodshot and a thin line of stubble was growing along his jawbone. He'd obviously fallen asleep at the bar last night, and had finally stumbled on home, still hungover. Ugh, the man disgusted me.

Nonetheless, I told him what had happened to Copper. And you'll never believe what he said. When I told him my dog of eleven years was dead, he laughed under his stale breath and muttered, "Saves us some money."

I'd never hated someone so much in my life.

Now, twenty-four hours later, I was still angry with him. He caused my mind to blur and my hands to clench into fists at the thought of him and what he'd said. Didn't he care about me at all?

I was so worked up that I didn't look where I was going as I stumbled out of math class. I accidentally bumped into someone, a girl. We said "sorry" in unison, and it was kind of funny, but I didn't laugh. Instead, I just kept walking. But as the crowd dispersed, I found myself looking back to see if I could recognize the girl I'd run into.

There were people everywhere, though, and I couldn't find her. Oh well. It was unlikely we'd ever speak again.
