[7] Coming Back

Chapter Seven – Coming Back

andromeda-

                I slowly open my eyes and close them again due to the blinding light. I hear a voice mumble, “Sorry, wasn’t able to close the curtains.” I hear rustling and take it as the signal to open my eyes. Jace was standing a few feet away from me. Jace, of all people?

                He was looking at me intently and I look back but it seemed like he wasn’t focused on my eyes. We just stare at each other and when I couldn’t take it anymore I cleared my throat and asked, “How long have I been out?” That seemed to break Jace from his reverie. He shakes his head and answers, “Just a couple of hours.” I frown. Then why is he in here? Was he watching me?

                Before I could even ask Jace, the door opens and the Fate Queen comes in. “Oh, she’s awake!” she says and looks at Jace. So, the Fate Queen asked him to be here. I can’t help but feel a pang in my chest because of that. But I shake it off. What’s the problem with the Fate Queen asking him to be here? He probably doesn’t want to be here. A voice in my head says and I wince.

                The Fate Queen sends me a worried look. “Oh, no. I’m okay. Just thought of something... unpleasant.” Really, did I have to say that? The Fate Queen gives me a small smile and says to Jace and I, “Well then, breakfast is ready. Come on, you missed dinner, Andromeda.”

                I nod and get up too fast. I become dizzy and Jace holds me up. I nod my thanks to him but due to our closeness, my forehead hits the side of his head and we both grunt and say, “Oww!” The Fate Queen chuckles and says, “Come on, you two rock stars. Head banging and stuff.” with a quivering lip, obviously trying not to laugh.

                I get up on my own and follow the Fate Queen with Jace behind me.

                The door to the dining room opens and I immediately see Celia serving breakfast. “Good morning, Fate Queen!” she chirps and I give her a curt nod.

                I sit down at the head of the table and Jace sits on my right while Andromeda sits on my left. I give Celia a questioning look and ask, “Where is Aphrodite?”

                “Oh, I had seen her by the garden, my Queen.” she answers while fixing the flowers sitting just a few feet from me.

                “Very well then, she must be engrossed with the Venus Flytraps again. Wondering how on Olympus did it get named ‘Venus.’” she jokes and Celia chuckles. Jace and Andromeda both wear puzzled looks but they don’t ask anything.

                “Oh, you know. That ugly plant. She’s a bit-oh, no that is an understatement-she is offended that is has been named Venus. Which is the same name for her Roman form, she cares a lot about her name.” I explain and stop when I have noticed that I was rambling. The confused looks on the two’s faces vanished.

                We eat in silence for a while. Jace and Andromeda looking around at anything but the other. I sigh inwardly. Oh, Jace. How I wish I could help you more.

                I clear my throat. “You know you haven’t been brought here to lounge around, right?” I ask them, giving them expectant looks. They both nod silently. “You will be oriented more on who you are, what’s your purpose and...” I pause for a dramatic effect. What? I like being dramatic!
