The sky is dark, the air is ice cold. A slow breeze drifts through my open window. The low hum of a crumbling society made evident with each voice that passes through the air.
Tonight is the night. The night a have a nightmare, again. I can feel it coming, I sense the imminent threat of attack by dreams. It's always the same. A spark of light, a flash, and then...chaos. But I have to go through it again, because I'm the only one who can help me. No one knows why I have these dreams, no one can stop them.
Knock knock
"Yo, Joseph?" My sister Maxine asks as she cracks open the door slightly.
"What's up Max?" I respond from my seat at my desk.
"I heard something outside, you mind coming with me to check it out?" She questions casually.
"You can't do it yourself? You're the one with Omega-class powers."
"Yeah, but you're the walking glowstick."
She's right, the only abilities I have are generating light from my hands and a resistance to light bright enough to blind anyone.
"Fine, let's go." I make it a point to sigh dramatically as I get up from the desk.

We make our way to the back door. Maxine reaches for the knob. I look down at my left hand, and snap my thumb against my index and middle finger. This activates the blue light in my palms, from then on I control the brightness of my light.
I dim my light and shine it on the door. Max looks up me, her brow furrowed.
"What's wrong?" I whisper
"The door."
I look at the door, nothing seems odd until I look at the hinges. They are snapped right off of the frame.
"Max, cover your eyes."
She looks at me in confusion before catching on. I snap on the light in my right hand and press my palms together. Then, slowly and quietly I turn, around and thrust my arms outwards and brighten the beams. Brighter and brighter.
But I see nothing. So I dim my lights.
"Your turn Max." I whisper to my sister.
"Finally."
Straightening her posture and closing her eyes, she let's out a low whistle. Then waits 5 seconds, then does it again.
"You get anything?" I ask
"Cover your ears." She warns.
I obey the warning.
I hardly hear the whistle at first, but gradually it rises in pitch and volume.
Then it stops. I uncover my ears and look over at Max. She is pointing to a spot in front of us.
I snap on the lights in both of my hands and shine them forward, right in the eyes of the intruder.
