Rain begins to shower over me. Cold, heavy rain. Thunder cracks through the sky. Lightning splits the clouds.
But I don't care. She's gone.
I sit kneeling next Maxine's body. Holding her lifeless hand in mine. Waiting to meet the same fate. But I know I won't, I can't. Not until I find Adam again.
I gave him a head start for a reason. To inspire fear. To show him how fear breaks the mind. So that he will live every day believing that I could be right behind him or miles away.
How could I let this happen?
Tears burst from my eyes again. New pain erupts in my chest. I look at my adopted sister. Her Brown hair is plastered against the ground by the water. Her red-ish black eyes lifeless in the moonlight.
Sirens blare down the street. Bright lights fill the alley. Men in armored vests, aiming guns at me fill the space.
"This is the Alpha Apprehension and Detention Division!" One shouts at me through a megaphone.
I stay completely silent. Shutting my eyes to the world.
"I said-"He begins to shout again.
"I know who you are." That was probably the wrong response. But I could care less.
"Then put your hands in the air!"
I don't move a muscle.
"Put your hands in the air or we will open fire!"
"Do it," I shout back, "you'll be doing me a favor."
They raise their guns and load live rounds. This is it.
"You have 'til the count of three."
This is it.
"One!"
No, Max told me to take care of Dad. I can't leave him now.
"Two!"
You know what to do
I raise my hands. The Guard stops counting.
Now
I light up my hands quickly. Allowing the brightness to grow. I start strobing my lights. Faster and faster. It doesn't affect me, but I know it's blinding them.
I jump to my feet and sprint out of the alley while cutting off my lights. The Guards are left reeling on the ground in the rain.
