The Intruder sits on his knees, hands over his ears. His eyes are squeezed shut tightly.

"Jeezus Max, how loud were you?" I ask my sister.

"Not loud." She says in low voice.

I look at the intruder. He is a young one. Around fourteen years old.

"I'm going to check, see what he's got." I say

"Careful, we don't know what he's capable of." Max warns

I walk up to the kid. He's taken his hands off of ears and now has them planted on the floor. He is breathing heavily. I walk behind him and shine my light on the back of his neck.

Three short, diagonal lines are permanently tattooed on his neck. All three tilted to the right. The air rushes from my lungs.

"What class is he?" Max calls through the darkness.

"Omega."

He launches into stand position at the mention of his Alpha-class. He whirls around and punches me square in the nose. The shock sends me reeling back.

"Max!" I shout to my sister

"Got it!" She says and immediately starts a high pitched whilst.

The whistle doesn't affect me much, my ears have gotten used to Maxine's abilities. However, the same cannot be said for the Intruder. He's dropped to the ground in agony. Hands pressed firmly against his ears.

I blink my lights twice at Max, signaling her to stop. Then the whistle fades into silence.

I walk over to the kid. Sweat beads sparkel against my light on his forehead. I pick him up by his collar and shine a dim light in his face. I know he can't hear me so I brighten my palms as a warning that I will blind if I have to.

He swallows hard and nods. Leading him over to a chair, I flick the kitchen light on and snap off my palms.

I grab a napkin and a pen off of the bar. I scribble the words:
"Why are you here?" onto the napkin and hand it to him. He reads it and looks up at me.

"I didn't mean any trouble," He says in an old southern accent,"jus' needed some food."

He runs his fingers through his scruffy dirty-blonde hair.

"How's your hearing?" Max asks him bluntly.

He looks up at her and gives a so-so motion with hand.

"Good enough." Max says

"Why'd you attack me after I mentioned-your class." I question

"I don't like bein' put in a category because o' what I am." He replies with confidence.

I look over at Max. She gives a slight shrug and turns back to the kid.

"What's your name?" She asks

"Adam Spenser." He says

"Well Adam, we're gonna' need you to get out of here. Our Dad will be back soon." Max tells him

"He's a city guard. He won't take kindly to an O-"I realize what I'm about to say in time,"to you being here."

Then the front door opens. A light flashes quickly and then all chaos breaks loose.
