The familiar sound of my alarm blared into my ears. I groaned loudly and pulled the duvet over my head in an attempt to fall back to sleep. Then I realised; it's my first day in my new school. I quickly swung my legs over the bed and headed towards the bathroom. Sighing as I splashed cold water on my face, I looked into the mirror to inspect my appearance. My hair was a matted blonde mess and my eyes were dark from the lack of sleep – today is not going well so far. I pulled my hair up into a quick ponytail and proceeded back to my room. Opening up one of the brown boxes sat near my bed I hastily threw on a pair of shorts and a black and white cropped t-shirt before turning to pack my bag. I threw in all my new textbooks into my backpack and grabbed my guitar from the corner of the room where it stood upright.

Music has always been my life. I started playing the piano when I was six and fell in love with it, and since then I began to play more and more instruments. At the moment I play the piano, guitar, bass, violin, and I'm hoping to one day be able to play the drums. My best friend plays the drums and she vowed to teach me - but that was before I moved. The company my dad works for raised his position and his salary however told him they would have to transfer him to the office in Australia due to a vacancy they needed him to fill. Despite how far away it was from LA he had to oblige as it was such a great opportunity for him.

Not for me. It feels as if that moving hasn't just felt like I've left my old friends, my old enemies, and my old school behind, it feels like a part of me was left behind too. All those memories from the 17 years I've lived in LA seem distant now that I'm in Sydney.

My train of thought was halted as I heard my dad call me from downstairs 'Ally, you ready? I'll drive you today.'

I quickly ran down the stairs and changed into a pair of chucks. 'Yep' I followed him into the car and sat there in comfortable silence as he backed out the driveway.

'You nervous?' he asked, squeezing my knee reassuringly.

'Nope, not at all.'

We spent the rest of the journey with my dad talking about his new office, rambling on about how great it was as I sat there soundlessly, nodding my head on queue and laughing whenever he told some lame joke. As we neared the school my stomach turned and my mind began to race. What if no one likes me? What if I don't like anyone? Would I make friends easily or will it take me weeks? Should I be this nervous?

'Okay, maybe I am a little nervous.'

My dad chuckled and stopped the car outside. 'Norwest Christian College' I smiled weakly, grabbed my bag and got out the car.

'Good luck Ally!' my dad yelled as I began to walk away. I waved and hurried towards the school. Groups of people were randomly dotted around the outside of the school building talking about their summer holiday and hilarious things that they did the other day. Feeling more and more out of place with every step, I ignored them and quickly entered the school to find the reception and pick up my timetable. I knocked on the door, playing nervously with a frayed thread on my bag.

'Come in.'

I stepped inside, closing the door behind me.

'Are you...' she typed quickly on the keyboard, '...Alice Hall?'

'Yeah, I'm Ally.'

'Welcome!' she laughed. She motioned me to sit down and offered me a cookie. I politely declined and sat down on the chair in front of her desk. She handed me a piece of paper, and told me to ask any student for help if I was lost. I thanked her and left the room. I quickly checked to see my classes for today; Math, Physics, Spanish, English and Music. Today should be interesting.

The first two lessons I'd managed to breeze through, keeping my head down but still engaging in conversation and answering politely the usual generic questions like 'oh my god are you American?' 'I looove your accent'. 'No shit' I was tempted to reply with, but instead I opted for the nod and smile. As I walked down the corridor towards the cafeteria doors. I took steady steps towards the door. I pushed the doors open. Eyes widened, I stared at the mass of people screaming and laughing each absorbed in their own conversation. I quickly hurried towards the queue, and wrinkled my nose when the lunch lady slopped some kind of grey lump onto my tray.

'What is that?'

'It's better if you don't know.'

After buying my lunch I turned back to face the crowd. I had no idea who to sit with, I mean there was this one girl I sat next to in math who seemed kind of nice but I couldn't see her anywhere and I don't want to intrude on her anyway, I could always go each lunch in th-

"Need some help?"

Rapidly I swung round to find the source of the voice. A petite girl stood in front of me, narrowing her eyes. These cerulean eyes sat either side of her freckled nose. Her lips were voluptuous and were chewing on a piece of gum. Her brown hair hung in loose waves.

Well? She laughed, inspecting her chipped nails.

I nodded quickly uttering a single 'yeah.'

Laughing, she grabbed my shoulders and swung me round so I was facing the cafeteria riots again.

'Who's that?' I asked pointing at the nearest table

'Oh those are the popular nerds, they're totally obsessed with lord of the rings, though I'm pretty sure half of them get laid every week.' She then moved onto the next table 'these are the unpopular nerds – they're kind of gross – art geeks, drama club, the most amazing people ever...' as she continued talking I looked at the corner of my eye towards a tall guy leaning against the door of the cafeteria, his hair was blonde and was styled upwards. He wore a pair of black jeans which clung tightly around his legs and a plain black shirt which hung loosely. As I unconsciously stared I hadn't realised that he had looked up directly at me. His face formed a frown and I quickly looked away, embarrassed.

'...and that concludes the cafeteria tables' she finished.

I quickly snapped out of my trance and laughed 'oh wow okay thanks'

'No problemo' she replied, 'hey by the way I didn't catch your name. I'm Emily' she stretched out her hand, gesturing that I shook it. I put my hand in hers quickly shaking before withdrawing.

'I'm Ally' I smiled, shifting from foot to foot, as I realised we'd probably been standing in the middle of the canteen for 15 minutes now. As if she had read my mind she began to turn and walked towards her own table, before turning round.

'Are you coming or not?' she asked

I quickly followed and sat down opposite her and the three other girls sat beside her.

Today wasn't too bad so far.
