Flora-

I hum. I shouldn't hum. It's a bad habit, one that adam loved. Adam. As bad as it is, I continue to hum, letting the sound bleed into the empty silence of the woods, until the hum bursts into song. Loud and clear The words of The dance of the seven shadows pour out of my mouth:

The shadows come,

They dance and play,

The song of the seven shadows,

Up and down,

around and round,

The dance of the seven shadows.

They come to play,

They come to claim,

Without no blame...

the song of the seven shadows.

I stop, and sink to the floor with a sob. Heart ache swallows my entire being, and I call for him. The birds chortle to my yell, an echo of my song, no, our song stained into their calls. My pain reaches a crescendo, loneliness turning into despair. For once I'm alone, with only the shadows of my past and future to keep me company.

I remember the day I met Adam. It was on the first day of kindergarten. An awkward, bony child, with a love for comic books and a deep crush for catwoman, I'd noticed him straight away. I've always been a strong willed child, and upon seeing him sitting in the corner with his superman lunchbox, being shunned by the other children, I had marched straight up to him and stuck out my hand.

"My name is florence, but you can call me flora because florence is an old lady name."

He didn't look up, didn't even twitch. I stood there, and gave it one more try.

"Superman huh? Batmans better. But I guess he's okay"

He looks up, and in a quiet voice, answers me.

"I wanted batman but my mum said they only had this."

I smiled, and when he smiled back, became friends for life.
