Training

I was sitting at the table waiting for Gran when she got up. I’d definitely slept well but I still felt a little exhausted.

“Up early aren’t we?” Gran’s voice made me relax a little. But I hadn’t realised what time it was. I looked at the clock on the cooker and saw it was eight thirty. I smiled in reply to my Grandmother who had made her way over to the coffee pot I had already filled.

“So are you excited?” Gran whispered with a wink.

“I wouldn’t say that, more confused really.” Which was all true, I had a pounding headache and this feeling in my stomach.

"Carmen I know it's a lot to take in, but you can't tell a soul. Promise me?" I could see the pleading in her eyes and knew I couldn't say anything, not even to Erin.

"I promise." That's the last thing I said over breakfast and went straight to the shower to properly wake up. I don't think I had ever enjoyed a shower as much as I did then, the warm water seemed to wash away every worry I had until I got out. This whole thing about me being a Caster had me freaked and I wanted to know what I could actually do.

I didn’t know what it all meant so I thought I’d ask Amelia. She said she’d help me. But when I tried to speak to her nothing happened. I wasn't going to make a fool out of myself and try again so I went down the staircase to see Gran and try to get some answers from someone else.

"Gran, what does this all mean?”

"Carmen, you’re Caster which means you have magic inside of you. It flows in your veins. You’re connected with the whole world. Your job as a Caster is to keep the balance of nature. Amelia is the strongest of our kind and was cursed many years ago by the dark Casters. She now relies on us to free her from this curse. You see there are two kinds of Casters. Light and Dark. You choose what side you’re on. Some light Casters turn dark and some dark turn light. Our family has been blessed with helping Amelia. As I told you many of us have failed but I have this feeling you won’t." Gran explained, she sat herself down on the chair across from me and took a sip from her coffee.

“Is Dad a Caster?” I asked.

“No, she doesn’t have the spirit. You however, do. Caster’s need to be strong, determined, independent and female. You’re Father is none of those things.” I laughed at her joke but I still had a million questions.

“So how can I talk to Amelia?”

“Amelia is on the other side. She hasn’t moved on to peace and she isn’t here walking this world. She’s able to see us and hear us and go where she pleases. Many witches are on the other side helping Amelia contact our family.” That explained some things. “You see Carmen, Amelia has to want to talk to you and you have to let her in for it to happen. If you’re both allowing it to happen you can talk and enter each other’s minds.”

“And as a Caster I can cast spells?” I asked a little excited about that thought.

“Yes, you learn spells and will be able to cast them for protection and defence. And each Caster Family has an ability. Some can talk to the dead, some can speak to animals, and some can even control mortals.  We however can control nature; Control the weather, the elements such as fire, water, air, and ice, we can also control plants and talk to the trees.”

“Talk to the trees?” That sounded like something someone who was high would say.

“Tree have spirits of our ancestors who also haven’t found peace. Just like Amelia.” This was all a lot to take in but it made me happy to think I  had be destined for something. It was unbelievable but amazing at the same time.
