The smell of blood and sweat filled the weird dusty room. This awful stench brought me back to this horrible reality. I slowly sat up and I felt the familiar pain overwhelm my body. I evened out my breathing and crawled towards the door. I was just a few feet away from the door, it was slightly open. The light from the hallway seeped into the dark room with a steady yellow glow. On the other side of the door two people were arguing. I dragged my body behind the door, eavesdropping on the conversation. The longer I heard the voices the sooner they became familiar. Cameron was yelling at his father, Roland. I nervously laid my head back and tried not to make a sound.
" What the hell is wrong with you! Abusing and raping my brother? You are one sick fuck you know that right? You have a damn wife, just fuck her all you want! Don't you ever lay a finger on my brother!" I heard Cameron scream at his dad. Shivers ran down my spine. I felt horrible. Disgusting.
" Don't you raise your voice at me, I am your father!! You do not interfere with your father's business do you understand? He isn't your brother, he is just a foolish broken boy we got from the foster home. He will never be a son to me! I'll do the same to you if you defend that thing." I heard Roland say, screaming at his own son.
" Weather you like it or not he is going to be MY brother, disown me if you want you selfish asshole!" Cameron screamed. All that could be heard was Cameron's low sobs. It got too quiet. Did they leave? I looked through the crack on the door and found Cameron looking down, silently crying. Roland was staring at him disappointingly. His face was red, tears were in his eyes. Roland swiftly raised his fist and brought it back down on his son's face. Cameron fell back on his bum. Roland was staring at his shaking hands. Cameron got up and backed away a few feet, with his hand over his bruised eye. Cameron shockingly stared at his father. A tear fell from Roland's eye. He looked up at Cameron with regret in his eyes. Roland took a step closer, but Cameron stopped him.
"D-Don't touch me. Leave me alone." Cameron spat. Roland hesitantly put his shaking hands down and ran to the opposite side of the hall. Cameron sighed and walked towards me. He scanned my newly bruised body and hugged me. He hoisted me in his arms and took me in his room without saying a word. Is he mad at me? He immediately took off my torn bloody clothes and aided me. Cameron didn't look good, excluding his eye. He was stumbling like a drunkard. Is he drunk..? No he said he'd never drink. Cameron started mumbling to himself. I sat up and watched Cameron pace back and forth for a few minutes. I cleared my throat, hoping to get his attention. He stopped pacing and looked at me with wide eyes. He flashed me a warm smile and said,
" Don't worry. Everything'll be fine from now on. You're not gunna stay here anymore.... so smile okay?" He resumed mumbling to himself.
" Wait....What? I'm getting kicked out on the damn street?" I said. My voice came out deeper than usual and croaky. He faced me with his eyes full of confusion.
He chuckled and said, "No, I mean you're gunna go to school now. There's no fucking way Imma let you stay by yourself again." My eyes widened in surprise. Did he just say school? My heart raced. I'm finally able to go outside for a long time. I tried to hide my excitement.
" W-wait I'm going to sc-school?" I said too quickly. Cameron looked at me with amusement. He laughed. " Yes you're going. Also you're going to 'move' in with me in my room. You need to stay with me from now on. No ifs ands or buts, do you understand?" Cameron said flashing his usual goofy smile. I felt warm inside. I couldn't help but smile real big. Cameron laughed and sat next to me on the bed. He dabbed alcohol on a huge cut I had on my face. I winced underneath his touch. After Cameron finished disinfecting my cheek he faced me and sighed.
