Chapter Four

"Gabriel, what a surprise," I greeted as he gave me a quick hug.

I quickly introduced him to Kona, and Callie smiled at him.

"Are you here by yourself?" Callie asked.

"No, um, Dani just headed into the bathroom," he replied, referring to his sister.

"Is Alexis here too?" I asked.

"Oh no, um, we broke up recently," he answered quietly.

"I didn't know; I'm so sorry," I said.

"It's alright. So, how are you, Mia?" he asked. "I haven't talked to you since that night that we skyped."

"I've been great, just hanging out with Callie and Kona."

"How's Wesley? Is he still drowning in hatred?" he asked.

"Yeah...I'm sorry about what he said about you only getting into law school because of your father."

"Wes can be a total asshole sometimes," Kona added.

I shot him a "really?" look. Kona shrugged.

"Well, it's true," he claimed.

"Is he here with you guys?" Gabriel inquired.

"No, he's at work right now," I answered.

"Gabriel, we got lucky and got a big circular booth. Would you and Dani want to sit with us?" Callie asked.

"Um...yeah," he said, looking behind him to see Dani approaching us.

"Hey guys," she smiled. "I see two familiar faces and a new one."

"Hey, I'm Kona."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Dani."

"Sis, is it okay if we sit with them?"

"Definitely! I'll sit next to Kona," she grinned even wider.

Callie nudged me and gestured to the awkward face Kona was making at Dani. I scooted over to make room for Gabriel.

"So, are you going to tell me about Alexis or...is that totally none of my business? If so, feel free to slap me out of my gossiping mood."

He chuckled a little bit. "Let's just say, there was someone else for her."

"No freaking way," Callie said, leaning over.

"Should've known you'd be listening closely," Gabriel said to her.

"I like to know things."

"I'm aware."

"I might as well tell the whole table; it's basically out in the open anyway. Everyone who knows us has heard a little something."

"Gabriel, really, Alexis was not for you anyway," Dani said.

"What did this Alexis chick do?" Kona asked.

"There was this guy who was trying to figure out which law school to attend. You see, Kona, my dad is the head of admissions. Naturally, I introduced him to my father. My father had Alexis show him around campus. They ended up hooking up in one of the lecture halls."

"Shit, I feel you. When a woman takes your love for granted," Kona said. "I've been there, and it sucks."

"Tell me about it," he agreed.

I put my arm around Gabriel and gave him a quick sideways hug.

"It's all good; you'll find someone better, someone who actually respects you," I assured him.
