Chapter Seven

It was around eight o'clock when my phone started ringing. I ran into the kitchen where Kona and Callie were making ravioli.

"Guys, Wesley. He's calling me," I told them.

"Girl, you better not pick up that phone. Actually, tomorrow, we are changing your number," Callie responded.

"What do you think he wants to say to me?" I asked.

"Probably some stupid shit to make you go back to him," Kona said.

"Maybe just once. I'll answer. I'll—"

My phone stopped ringing and went to voicemail. A few seconds later, it flashed to give me a notification.

"Can I at least check my voicemail?" I requested.

"If it will soothe your wondering then yes," Callie stated. "But you better not call him back and you're putting that thing on speakerphone."

"Done deal," I said, punching in my four-digit passcode.

Wesley said, "I came home and saw that note you left me. Where the fuck did you go, baby? How could you just leave me like that? Two years, sweetheart, and you're just going to throw all of that away? You said you loved me. Things are messed up between us, and I know that, but you need me. Don't you? Come on, I know you can't stay away for too long. Call me back."

"What an asshole," Kona said when the message ended.

"Guys, he's right, though. I love him, and you're not supposed to leave the people you love behind."

"Mia, you're not supposed to hurt the people you love either," Callie said.

"But love hurts. Love hurts, sometimes. And you have to figure out if your love is strong enough to make it all worth it."

"And you think that Wesley's manipulation and abusiveness are forms of love? Sure, it may be true that deep down, he loves you. But he also cheated on you and is using you like an object. He's not treating you like a person anymore. You need to push love aside and think about your own well-being," Kona said.

"We're looking out for you, Mia. And we're glad that we found out about your situation before it was too late," Callie added.

"What do you mean by too late?" I asked.

"Wesley could have killed you," Callie clarified.

"He would never do that!" I argued.

"Hey, you never know."

"You're wrong about that. I mean, Callie, you've known him for a while. He's not that bad of a guy."

"That's what I thought," she stated. "But apparently he's decided to show his true colors."

"People change," I said. "Maybe if I give him time, he'll change back."

"People don't backtrack, people change in a forward motion. As in, Wesley is changing into who he truly is. He's always been this way; it's just taken this long to make its way to the surface."

"Do you really believe that?"

"I haven't known him for very long, and I know that I don't really like him that much," Kona said, "But Wesley seems like he could be a good guy. At some point, maybe he was, but presently, he's not good for you. You're not safe, Mia."

"Do me a favor," I said.

"Anything," Callie and Kona replied.

"Take this away from me. I might do something stupid." I placed my phone in front of them and held my hands up in surrender.
