That night, I lay awake, restless. Sadie slept the entire night through. She only got up once and didn't come back for a really long time. I was almost asleep when I heard her scream.
"KAI!"
Instantly I was on my feet, running barefoot through the dead forest, feet catching on inconveniently placed roots, until I reached the source of the scream.
When my eyes, that had once seen everything in the dark, adjusted to the darkness, I saw that Sadie was being held hostage by my old "friend", Shan, who was also a demon fledgling. He had a small, index finger sized blade pressed against Sadie's neck, ready to slice it open.
When he saw me, his yellow eyes, showed confused emotions, then quickly snapped back to stone cold murder.
"Did you forget about us, Kai? About me? Your old "pal"..." He sneered. "After you failed, they passed the job to me. I guess they finally recognized true strength."
"Argh!!!" Sadie struggled within his tight hold. "I'm going... To kill you!!!"
Shan chuckled. "Darling, " he smirked, tightening his grip "?and pressing the knife closer to Sadie's neck with every word, "I'm already dead."
This was it. I knew he wouldn't hesitate to kill her. If not to get back at me, then to get in the good graces of the demon council.
I got mad, thinking he could kill her, after I had worked so hard to save her.
It wasn't fair. He couldn't just-
I was interrupted as a bright blue light erupted from my body. I had no idea where it came from, but it felt right, somehow. It made me fell energized.
As the glow faded, Shans body had been reduced to ashes, and Sadie was kneeling on the ground holding her eyes tightly.
How did Sadie survive? Maybe my energy blast had a conscience and only hurt those a who deserved it, those with evil souls.
"That was a little bright, wasn't it?" I chuckled, picking Sadie up and lifting her up on to my back. I knew there would be more where Shan came from, so I quickened our pace, sprinting through the trees. As I ran , I thought about what I had just done. As a demon, I didn't have powers like that! Maybe I really was turning human again?
I kept running until I was sure that no one had followed us. I stopped near a river, with tall, and graceful willow trees shielding its banks, dipping down into the lazy water.
"We're safer now." I said, scanning up and down the river for possible threats.
"Oh, good! Cause for a second there I-"
"No." I said , cutting her off mid-sentence.
" I said we were safer. Not safe."We slept through the rest of the night, the willow trees protecting us from spying eyes.
