As soon as he said that, everything that I had forgotten came rushing back to me.
All of my past, my memories of the protectors. I remembered everything that being a demon had helped me to forget.
"Well?" I said. " Where are they? They should be here! I'm one of them!"
The angel guards surrounding the throne tensed up, hands on their swords, ready for action, in case I happened to pose a threat to their ruler.
But the Head Angel motioned for them to stand down, as he did not consider me a threat, for he knew of my background. He seemed a bit hesitant to answer at first, but he finally told me the bitter truth.
"They aren't coming, Kai." He spoke quietly now, as if to spare my feelings.
"They want to make sure that you have every last bit of demon out of your blood, and won't be persuaded in battle to turn against them. They need concrete proof that they can trust you again. They want you to complete a task."" Yeah sure! I'll do anything to prove my worthiness." I say, unaware of what's about to happen.
"They want you to kill the demon king."
"What? That's damn near impossible, and you know it!" I yell, and again the guards flinch towards their weapons, and this time the Head Angel makes no effort to calm them.
"Even so, that is the task. Take it and succeed, and you shall become a protector once more. Fail, and, well, I'm afraid if you fail, you won't be around to find out what happens next.""Fine. I accept. But if I'm doing this, I'm doing it on my own, my way. That means she stays here." I jab my finger in sadie's general direction unaware of where she actually is, because the guards have pulled her away from the commotion.
" You must sneak into the castle and assassinate the Demon king, and it must be you who does it, or you will not be accepted back into the fellowship of protectors."
"Yes. I understand. When do I leave?"
"Right now. The maids have prepared three days worth of rations and supplies, and that should be enough to ride you over. Good luck, Kai." His voice fades away as I pass back through the solid gold doors. They slam behind me, and I realize that this is actually happening.
I'm going to kill a King.
