I paused and gave a sharp yet confused look to Marley who just shrugged.
“Um, I’m not planning on taking her down… I just wanted to lead role” I told them. Both looked at each other and shook there heads.
“You’re already standing up to her! You could be like a hero or something” Marley said sitting down on her bed.
“I don’t want to be a hero. I just want to be Juliet! And now I have to learn a Brodway song which doesn’t make any sense because there isn’t even any singing in Romeo and Juliet. That’s why I wanted the lead” I confessed as I looked through my laptop to find a good song.
“That’s what Miss Noris does even if there isn’t any singing in the play. She wants to make sure that the lead has a strong voice that carries through the audience” Cassie answered while stretching. I remembered that Marley said she was a dancer.
“Any idea on what song I should sing?” I asked and the two shrugged. I sighed and nodded closing my laptop. After awhile of talking and laughing I had to go back to my dorm to get some sleep. When I entered the room Emma was doing a handstand in the corner. I put my stuff down and changed in my pajamas in the bathroom. When I walked back she was in the same position. I got into bed and looked over at her.
“It relaxes me” She answered annoyed. I nodded and slowly went to sleep.
“More emotion Abby!” Miss Noris yelled the next day in Drama class. A poor girl was just trying to speak the one line she had in the whole play but Miss Noris made her do it over and over again. I sat and read over my monologue. I wanted to make sure I knew all my lines. Looking out of the corner of my eye I saw Hannah Miller sitting next to Justin. He was leaning back in the chair and Hannah was making fun of the girls going on stage. Justin didn’t seem to be listening to a word she was saying. He had earphones in and he was drumming with his fingers in the air when he looked over at me. I gave him a small smile and he returned one with his purely white teeth. Butterfly’s came over me and I looked away before he thought I was too desperate.
When class was over I was walking done the hallway. I was trying to clear my head, I knew if I thought of Justin to much he would start to be a distraction, I didn’t want to think if I got the part of Juliet I would be able to kiss him because he was Romeo…
“Something must be on your mind” A voice called, knocking me out of my daydream. I saw Chase walking next to me “Where are you headed?” He asked
“Well I probably should be practicing a song for theater class” I told him honestly.
“That doesn’t sound very fun… How about you come with me, I’m singing in a small coffee house on campus” He said.
“Hm… Its very convincing but I don’t know if I should” I answered. He gave me the puppy dog look and I couldn’t help but laugh “Ok I’ll go!” I promised.
He gave a big smile and he showed me the way to the shop.
“I hear you’re taking down Hannah Miller” Chase smiled.
“I wasn’t meaning to!” I told him hopelessly as we walked into the coffee place. It was full of people all ready but Chase sat me front row. It seems like everyone thought I was trying to take her place
“Break a leg” I told him. He nodded thanks while grabbing his guitar and sat on the stool in front of everyone that was rested on the stage.
“This ones for a friend who got the chance out of her busy life to come see me” Chase said looking at me. I laughed and he started to play a really nice song but I couldn’t seem to listen to his voice because Justin White had walked through the doors without Hannah. He sat in a chair by himself and every girl around him was staring. Justin wasn’t paying much attention to any of those girls but seemed to be glancing at the door every now and then nervously. I watched him, trying to figure him out. He had everything, the perfect looks, a beautiful voice and he could act. Why was he with such a mean girl like Hannah Miller? The song slowly came to an end and Chase smiled at the cheers. He walked off stage and came up to me. I felt rather guilty that I didn’t pay that much attention to his song but he would never know that.
Chase walked me back to my dorm and we said our goodbyes. I walked inside my room expecting something weird to be going on… Like Emma making some type of potion that would kill me in my sleep. But instead I heard singing from someone who was in the shower. It was a beautiful voice. It was as if an angle was in my bathroom
“Emma” I called nervously looking around the room “Someone is in our shower!” I said shocked. Yet no matter how strange I thought it was that a girl was in our shower I didn’t want the singing to stop, it was to beautiful. So I sat there listening to her singing a slow song but then when that song ended she changed to a new one. I remembered this song as ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ from Funny Girl. She sang the song perfectly and that’s when it clicked. I need to sing that song for the audition, I thought, it’s from Broadway. I heard the shower turn off and the voice stopped singing. First, I was going to give whoever had the nerve to use Emma’s and I shower a piece of my mind. Next, I was going to ask her to teacher me how to do that.
“Excuse me” I said when the door opened. I gasped and had to blink a couple of times so I knew I was really seeing that girl.
“What?” Emma asked rudely. I looked behind her and back into the bathroom to make sure it was really her.
“You sing?” I breathed. Emma shrugged and walked pasted me. She already had her Goth Pj’s on.
“So what if I do?” She shot at me. I wasn’t in any mood to fight with her
“You need to teach me how to sing that song. Don’t Rain On My Parade” I told her desperately
