My face was burning, stinging like a jug of boiling water had been tipped on me. I stared blankly at the floor like I always did. It was best not to retaliate, it would only make things worse. "What in the hell did you think you were doing?! You were meant to be in bed an hour ago!" she screamed, slapping me across the face, much harder than the previous times. I flinched when her hand came into contact with my skin, but still I remained silent. The truth was, I could never sleep properly, especially not in this sad excuse for a home.

She punched me one more time, hitting me right in the eye and sending a wave of shock through my body. My legs gave in and I fell to the floor, hearing the relieving sound of the door slamming shut behind me. My vision became blurry and I felt a small tear emerge from the corner of my eye. I slowly stood up from the floor and opened the draw of my crappy nightstand, selecting the small mirror from inside. I lifted it up to my face, dabbing at my skin and inspecting my already swollen eye. I placed the mirror back inside the draw and slumped onto my bed. I tucked my legs into my chest and felt my breathing hasten and myself inhaling quick gasps of air.

Images of them flashed in and out of my mind, the thundering sounds of sirens surrounding me and enclosing me in their noise. I clutched my head, screaming for it to stop, but on and on it raged, until I had no energy left in my body to go on. My eyes closed and before I knew it, the sun had risen once again. Another dreadful day had begun.
