I was confused. I rose from my seat, closing my notebook and stepping towards Mrs Brackett. I felt her hand on my back and she shoved me through the doorway and out into the hall. In silence, she lead me to the front room, where a tall, blonde man was sitting. She forcefully pushed me towards him, then stood behind me.

He stood up from his seat and put his arm out as if he was going to hug me. "Hello," he said calmly, returning his hand to its original position. "I'm Scott. I'm here to adopt someone."

I stared at him blankly, unsure of what to say. The silence was deafening. "Hi. I'm Ellen. I'm 15." I replied, quietly.

"Tell me about yourself." Scott said, inquisitively. I hesitated.

"I love theatre and acting. I also write my own songs and I love animals...usually more than I like people." I replied, quietly mumbling the last part.

Scott sat with a smile on his face, and said "how would you like to be adopted?"

I looked up from the ground, confused and unsure if I'd imagined Scott's last words. "Me?" I said, look at Scott, puzzled. It turns out he really did ask me if I wanted to be adopted, and I hadn't just imagined it. I was in shock.

Mrs Brackett motioned for me to go back up to my room and pack my things. Scott waited where he was. Apparently he'd read the files
of all the orphans aged 13 and older, so he already knew a lot about me. He was just making small talk.

I made it to my room, and shoved my little belongings into my backpack,  slinging it over my shoulder. But on the way back into the front room, I found myself panicking a little. I was unsure. I knew I definitely wanted to get out of here, but how could I trust someone whom I only knew the name of?
