Hijikata POV

"Chizuru! Come on! Ekō's on my route today!" Heisuke said running like a maniac around HQ. His antics annoying me greatly.

"Heisuke! Why are you running around like a headless chicken?" I glared at him and he gulped.

"Uh, it's April 19th sir so it Ekō's 12th birthday today...and she's uh her shop is on route on my rounds today...so I'm excited to see her?" He chuckled nervously as Chizuru appeared in the doorway.

"Heisuke you don't have time to doddle on your rounds! Also as soon as you get back we're having a meeting so don't waste time!" I barked and he frowned.

"Jeez Hijikata-San..." He rubbed his neck and Chizuru had a shocked look on her face. "What?" I snapped. They both jumped and back up.

"You just seem angrier than usual sir." Chizuru said quietly. "I-" straightening up I cleared my throat. "Oh. Well - I apologise. I have been very busy lately, I guess the stress is getting to me."I pressed a hand to my  forehead.

"Don't frown Toshi."

Chizuru, Heisuke and I jumped. Opening my door fully, a young girl and boy stood on the decking both with short swords on their hips. The girls long brown hair tied back with her fringe hanging close to her bright blue eyes. The young boy with the same hair style, just a shorter pony tail. His brown eyes bright and smiling.

"Hiya Heisuke, Chizuru!" They chorused and she pressed her hand to my forehead. "Don't frown Toshi," she smirked.

"Ekō!!!" Heisuke screamed and lifted her up, running out my door, into the courtyard and around the compound. Souji stood beside me laughing with Chizuru. "She's so tall." I shook my head smiling.

"Yeah, hey Hijikata-San. Long time no see, I think I was five last time I saw you." Souji said and I chuckled. "And Chizuru, I saw you pass the shop a few days ago, Ekō was kinda surprised when you didn't call in." He said to her and she blushed.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I forgot." She laughed at the young boy.

"Heisuke! Put me down!" Ekō laughed as he continued to run with her over his shoulder. "No! Your not leaving again!" He yelled and ran past Shinpatchi.

"Hey! Who's Heisuke-EKŌ?!" He began chasing them as well.

"Chizuru please go and gather the captains and Kondo-San." I ordered her. She nodded and ran off. "How have you both been?" I asked Souji and he grinned. "Great! She's the twin I never had. We've both been training with a short sword for a few years now.  She talks about you guys all the time." He said and my chest clenched.

Looking out into the courtyard, Heisuke was spinning her round repeatedly until Shinpatchi lifted her up onto his shoulder. "You've gotten so tall!"

"And you've gotten so old!" She smirked and leaped out of his grip running towards the rooms. "Hey! Come back here you little minx!" They called and chased her.

Saito POV

Screaming and shouting outside my room disturbed me so I opened it and stepped out side. What is going on? I could here the thunder of running footsteps and stepped out further.

"Oomph!" Suddenly I was facing roof, a mass of brown curls in my face. "What the?" The persons head shot up and a grin slowly crept across her face.

"Ekō?" I said shocked and she winked. "What's up Saito?" She smirked and wrapped her arms around my neck. Getting to my feet, I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight.

Sighing deeply I pulled back a little. "It's been a while little one." I smiled at her and she grinned. "Yeah, where have you been? I had to trek all the way up here to find you!" She threw her arms up in the air and I shook my head smiling. "Things have been busy for the Shinsengumi, some one has to train all our new recruits."
