It was the middle of the night and Patrick was completely engaged. There was no grabbing his attention from the book he was currently reading. His eyes skimmed over each and every line, and his fingers twitched with anticipation concerning what would occur next in the storyline. It had been a long time since a story managed to elicit such a strong response from him, and the excitement he felt was refreshing. Suddenly, steps could be heard making their way to his bunk on the bus, but Patrick was oblivious to it, completely enraptured in his book. Only when the footsteps stopped and the curtain sheltering him from the outside world, also known as the rest of the tour bus, was slightly tugged open, did the singer even glance up from his book. His eyes met an all too familiar, sleep-deprived face that held a self-depreciating smile. The visitor began to croak out, "Hey 'Trick, do you think I could spend-" only to be interrupted by the quick flick of Patrick's arm opening in front of him, leaving an open space for his guest to hobble in. The only words he spoke were, "Of course, Pete," in a soft voice as he continued to read.
Pete gave a grateful grin, hoping Patrick would take notice of it despite being completely engrossed in his story, and snuggled in next to the strawberry blond. The bassist hummed in content as he laid his head on the avid reader's chest. The singer, if he noticed at all, payed no mind and only continued to skim through his book. Slowly but eventually, whatever was plaguing Pete that particular night began to slip away, and sleep found it's way to him. Gentle snores slipped from his mouth, and just about then did Patrick finish his new favorite story.
Glancing down, he could not help but smile fondly at the sight before him. There was his best friend sleeping away soundly, look as peaceful as possible, and Patrick could not be more grateful. The past few months had been incredibly stressful on both of them, as well as Joe and Andy. The four of them had been working nonstop at perfecting their new album, and as a result, tensions had been at a high lately. At this moment, however, it seemed like all of that was nonexistent. There was no stress apparent on Pete's face whatsoever, a rare sight to behold. Attempting to express the joy the sight brought him, Patrick gently left a kiss on the bassist's forehead and carefully maneuvered himself into a comfortable position without disturbing the sleeping man beside him.
While there was no doubt things would go back to normal in the morning, and once again be at least somewhat agonizing, for now the singer could be at peace. As sleep slowly washed over him, he could of sworn he heard the murmur of, "Love you Patrick." The thought made him smile slightly, and whether or not it was truly uttered did not make a difference to him whatsoever. That night, he dreamed of happiness in the purest sense.
