"Where's your house? I'm turning on to your street, now" I said into the mike in my helmet.
"You sure it's the right street? Because some people get lost easily" he said through my speakers.
"Yes, I know you live by Miranda park. I'm on Miranda now and which house is it?" I say back as nicely as possible.
"I'm going to stand outside so you'll know, ok?" he said nicely.
"Ok. Be there in a minute or two" I reply back.
I pulled off my helmet ans wondered how he can be so nice and calm when I am trying to not strangle him over the phone. I pull up next to a house that's decent in size. Two stories, half of a wraparound porch, swings in the front lawn, and some kids on a trampoline. Seeing and hearing them laugh made me smile, until I saw someone walking out the front door.
"Hey, get away from my kids. Walk your Bike down the road before turning it on so you don't blast their ears" he said rudely.
I put my helmet back on, and saw Matt, about seven houses down, on the other aide of the road. I put up my kickstand, and rev the quiet engine. I rush down the street, do a cookie, and stop in front of his gate. He just gapes at the beauty of my Bike as he walks out of his lawn and up to where I sit on the road. I take off my helmet again and shake out my hair for no reason.
"I know you don't have anything to say, so just sit your ass behind me and hold on" I say sweetly as he walks over and gives me a quick kiss.
"How...wha...but...when?" he stutters.
"You will hear the story when we get to the house. I have a lot to say apparently" I day with an exasperates sigh.
I grab my hair, twist it, and stuff it into the helmet as I put it back on. I gave Matt the spare helmet that I keep in the side 'pocket'. I stuff his bag where the helmet was, and speed off down the road. I can feel him squeeze his arms tighter when we go around the sharp corners and I can't help smiling at this. It just seems so funny, and I don't know why.
I pull up into the driveway and turn off my Bike. I let Matt get off before I put the kickstand down and get off myself. I toss Matt his bag, grab my lanyard with my keys on it, and take a leisurely walk towards the little porch. I prop the screen door open with my hip, undo the top lock, then the bottom and walk into the house.
"You managed to get this place for two weeks. How, exactly?" he said following me into the kitchen.
I dropped my helmet on the couch on my way there. I headed to the freezer as I thought of a good explanation. I looked in as I opened it and saw some frozen peas, and decided to stick with the ice in a bag idea.
"I, umm, kinda pissed off Neal" I say still not looking at him.
"How?" he said suddenly worried.
"Snapped at him about locking up my Bike, he told me not to take 'that tone' with him and that if I said another word, he'd backhand me. I said 'do it' and he did right as my mom walked in. She threatened him with a gun and divorce. Then told me to pack my clothes and leave with my Bike" I said .
"Let me see" Matt said surprisingly calm as he gently turned my head to where he could see the left side of my face.
I could see him wince at the swelling as he grabbed the peas from the freezer. I looked at them in disgust but grabbed them from him and went to sit in the living room to watch some TV. I was flipping through the channels before Matt grabbed the other clicker and turned the TV off.
"I'm bored. And I don't want to watch TV right now. Do you know of anything more fun that we can do?" he asked hopefully.
"Lay down like you do in the lounge" I demand of him with a little smile on my lips.
