Chapter 8:
Katherine

She woke up the next morning in her own bed with a splitting headache.

All the events of the night before were jumbled in her brain and she didn’t remember most of them. They were all just a blur.

She went to sit up and moaned in pain as her head let out a splitting pain that travelled right down to her feet. She slowly lay back down and stared up at the ceiling. She didn’t know what time it was but there was no way she was getting out of bed for school this morning. It just wasn’t going to happen.

There was a soft knock on her door and she let out a moan to answer, words having escaped her.

Gabriel walked in with a tray in his hands, “I didn’t know what you wanted so I brought everything...” He said placing the tray on her legs.

Katherine smiled and lifted her head slightly, he wasn’t kidding. He had literally brought everything that was considered a meal for breakfast.  There were eggs, waffles, pancakes, toast and bacon; a glass of orange juice and milk.

She stared at the food and then looked up at her angel and said “I can’t eat all this.”

He grinned “I can help you.”

She smiled shyly at him and then turned back to her tray of food. She started with the waffles, taking a fork and knife from the side of the plate and cutting into them. She ate slowly, her head feeling like it had been run over by a semi truck. Chewing her food even hurt, she placed her utensils down and put her palm on her forehead.

Gabriel looked at her in concern, “Are you okay?” He placed his hand on hers, looking into her eyes with deep worry.

Katherine shook her head slowly, “My head feels like it is going to explode, what happened last night?”

“You mean you don’t remember?”

“No... Did I get the demon?” She asked quietly.

Gabriel nodded happily, “You were amazing Katherine, one of the best hunters I’ve ever encountered!”

She smiled at the compliment. No one had ever said that to her before, not that anyone was ever able to. Emilie thought she was amazing because she didn’t know any better and her parents didn’t even know she hunted. It made her heart swell to know she was making someone proud.

Even if it was someone who was still mostly a stranger.

“Thank you. That... That is really sweet of you.” She pushed her hair back out of her eyes and blinked a few times in pain, “What time is it?”

“Almost noon, don’t worry I called the school and told them you were ill and wouldn’t be there today.” Gabriel said with a sympathetic glance.

He lifted the tray off her legs as she slid down and closed her eyes. She felt him stand up and for a split second wanted to call him back. She didn’t really want to be alone with her thoughts and then pain of her headache.

But by the time she had even built up the courage to call him back, she heard the door shut. Sure she knew he would’ve heard her no matter what but she let go of her thoughts and felt herself drift back into sleep.

The room was dark, people stood around her in long black robes swaying from side to side. She looked around her but it was too dark to see anything past the torches on the walls that shone upon her and then robed people around her.

She was strapped to a stone table that had leather straps binding her wrists and ankles. Looking around her in fear she heard a soft chanting coming from who she assumed were her captors.

She couldn’t understand them but whatever they were saying Katherine knew it wasn’t good. They chanting stopped but her captors kept on humming the same haunting tune they’d been speaking.

She wanted to ask them what was going on but she didn’t dare say a word.

A robed person broke from the circle and walked toward her, holding something tightly in his right hand. It glinted silver in the dim light of the torches. Katherine’s heart skipped a beat as she realized the man (if it was a man) was holding a knife.

“What are you doing...?” Katherine whispered as the man came closer toward her.

He leaned over her, not saying a word. Only slowly bringing the knife down closer to her face and trailing it across her cheek, moving it along her neck all the way down to her feet. She stiffened as the cold metal came in contact with her bare feet. She was wearing a thin white dress that made her realize she was most likely a sacrifice to some sort of satanic cult.

The man began to mumble bring the knife back up to her throat. The men around in the circle started up their chanting again as he spoke,

“I sacrifice you to our Lord, who rules us truthfully and fairly. Guiding our every step. Let the angel Lucifer take you into the shelter of his wings and fly you to his fiery domain. Rest in peace dear child for you are safe. You shall know no more pain and no more sorrow...” He whispered over her taking the knife and pressing it hard against her throat so that the cold metal bit deep into her skin, drawing blood.

She squirmed to get away but her bounds held her tight.

There was a loud crash from behind the circle and she turned her eyes over in time to see the robed men falling like dominos. The man above her heard this but ignored it, quickly pressing the knife deeper so that her skin was broken now and a huge gash was made.

Feeling her blood flowing from her body she felt her eyes beginning to close. The man above her was pushed away and a man with golden eyes and wings stood above her now with curling brown hair and golden glow around him.

She knew who it was and she saw the pain in his eyes as he realized he was too late to save her.

“I failed again.” He whispered “Good bye my dear.” And as Katherine felt soft black wings of Lucifer begin to enclose her, soft angel lips rested on hers from the golden one and then... She died.
