Chapter 1:
Gabriel
He was lost and confused, there was darkness all around but he could still see. Why was he still here? He thought he had died, that Lucifer had used an angel sword to kill him. Didn't that mean he was dead forever now? Never to be returned?
"You have been chosen Gabriel." A voice boomed around him "Castiel has his charge and now I am giving you yours. She needs protection and guidance. I am going to send you to her. Do not fail me my son."
He felt a sharp jerk and saw a bright white light appear before him. He blinked in the sudden light and shrunk away from it, but another jerk and he was flying toward and through the light.
Gabriel fell through the sky and tried to steady himself. He felt his wings open, catching the wind and floating back down to the earth. When he hit the ground he landed in a forest. At first he didn't know where he was, but after a quick scan he discovered he had landed in the States somewhere near the Canadian border.
Standing up he brushed off his jacket and looked at his vessel. It was the same one he'd had before Lucifer had killed him. He smiled down at himself. My how he'd missed this! The humans had so many sensations and they were just heightened with his angel senses.
"Find her!" The voice said in his head "Find Katherine Mackenzie!"
Gabriel nodded at the invisible voice; he strode off into the forest trying to find the street.
If he was lucky he would in the town where she lived. He didn't get his hopes up though; life hadn't really been on his lately.
After walking for a good ten minutes he stopped and shook his head at his own stupidity. Why in the world was he walking>? He was an angel and could locate the girl and then just fly there!
"Come on Gabriel you're better than this!" He muttered to himself.
Still shaking his head at his stupidity he closed his eyes and focused. He scanned the small town and searched for the girl. He found her at the high school. Reading her thoughts he sat the school was almost over and what the address was.
He heaved a sigh and took flight. It took a minute to arrive at the unfamiliar location. He hovered above the school for a second or two, pondering how it was he was going to do this.
Based on what he'd read in Katherine's thoughts she was the daughter of a hunter family, she wanted to be a hunter as well and went out at night to help rid the town of monsters. Her parents were usually gone so they didn't know about her nightly activities.
She was fairly popular at school, had a lot of friends and a boyfriend. Good grades in school and a very promising future in college or university.
Katherine however, wanted none of it. She wanted to be on the family business. She knew everything there was to know and why shouldn't she? She could the best damn hunter that had ever been.
Gabriel liked her already. She was obviously strong willed and wanted to be what she was born to be. There was another side to this train of thought however. He didn't want to have a charge. He would rather have stayed dead.
Why should he, Gabriel the archangel, take care of some hunter who probably had an attitude problem? How was that fair?
A bell ringing broke through his thoughts. He looked down and saw a stream of students beginning to pour out of the school.
Now would be a good time to fly down without being noticed. With this in mind he stopped circling and dropped down onto the grass unnoticed. The swarms of students rushed past him all trying to get home. Not caring about who was around them except for their friends.
Gabriel searched the field for the girl but didn't see her anywhere. He took a breath of frustration and walked into the school where the crowd was not much better. They were loud and he winced as some random girl shrieked with laughter and it filled the whole hall.
He finally spotted the one he was looking for standing with two other girls and in the arms of some guy. His girl had dark auburn hair that fell in loose curls around her shoulders and framed her face; her eyes were brown and gave her a look of absolute innocence. She didn't seem to be much taller than him. The aura that surrounded her was one of strong willed, innocence and kindness. Basically she looked to be everything a hunter wasn't.
The boy who had her arms around her was athletic, brunette and had green eyes. He was taller than Katherine and him and looked to be a lot tougher and mean. Not the type of person that you would expect a girl like Katherine to be with.
As Gabriel watched them he felt a slight tug at his soul. He stared at the girl; she looked like someone he knew. Or well not really but her soul was like someone he knew. Someone from his past... Someone he'd loved long ago. He shook it off, she couldn't be and he prayed she wasn't. It would just end badly for everyone if she was.
He stared for a good minute trying to decide how he was going to introduce himself and tell her what he was without all these people finding out too. Or it being weird when he went over there to talk to her. There would be questions asked that neither of them would be able to answer. No one needed that.
Sighing he walked away from the scene and then heard a voice come over the sound system. They were giving a reminder to the students about something. He wasn't listening and to be honest he could care less what the person was saying. What mattered now was that he knew how to get Katherine alone now.
He hurried down the halls, following the signs that led to the office.
When he arrived he walked straight up to the front desk and gave a smile to the lady behind it.
She looked up at him and gave a shy smile "Can I help you?"
"Yes, could call down a student for me? Her parents were called away suddenly out of town for the week and asked me to let her know." He replied with a thankful smile.
"Of course! What's the student's name?"
"Katherine Mackenzie." He said relieved at how easy this was.
The lady nodded and pressed a button on her side of the desk. "Would Katherine Mackenzie please come down to the office? Katherine Mackenzie please come to the office."
Gabriel stood waiting patiently and watched her as she looked around confused and then said goodbye to her friends and walked down the hall toward the office. She entered the room and walked right by Gabriel at first, giving him a small smile.
"You called me down?" Katherine said to the receptionist.
"Yes, this man here has something to tell you." She replied gesturing to Gabriel and continuing to type on her computer.
Katherine looked at him with a worried expression.
"Don't worry, I have no bad news." Gabriel reassured her with a smile "My name is Gabriel. I'm a friend of your parents I am going to be checking in on you for the next week while your parents are away."
Her eyes grew big and she said "Okay, well come on. You can walk me to my car..."
He was a little surprised at how easy she took that but simply nodded, waved goodbye to the receptionist and followed her out of the office back outside.
Back in the bright sunlight she turned to him and said "Okay, who are you really? My parents would have told me if someone was coming!"
Gabriel smiled "Smart girl. Funny how your appearance doesn't show it."
Katherine blinked "Um thanks... I think... Who are you?"
"I told you, my name is Gabriel. I didn't lie; I am here to watch over you. Although I will admit it wasn't by your parents. You've guessed that already." He replied with a sneaky smile.
"Yeah I already figured that. Who sent you then?" She replied with obvious frustration.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Try me."
He sighed; he'd been right about the attitude. "You really want to know? Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you." He paused and she still stared at him expectantly. "I am Gabriel the archangel. I died at the hands of my brother Lucifer a few months ago but God, at least I hope it was him, brought me back. He told me to watch out for you, I have no clue why so don't ask."
She stared at him and said "I've seen and heard a lot strange, but that takes the cake."
Gabriel rolled his eyes "I knew you wouldn't believe me. You hunters are all the same." The fact that she didn't believe went on to prove that she wasn't who he thought she was. And that made him feel a whole lot better about taking care of this brat.
Again the girl blinked in confusion at him "How'd you know I was a hunter?"
"The same way I found out where to find you! I saw it in your thoughts." He replied exasperated.
"Yo-you're telling the truth..." She whispered.
"Duh! Now can we please go?" He said in annoyance.
"Yeah, my car's over here." She led the way down the stairs toward the parking lot. Pressing a button on her key ring, a blue Audi's lights flashed. They reached the car and Gabriel climbed into the passenger's side.
Katherine started the engine and they pulled out of the parking lot onto the street. As they drove along and Gabriel scanned the surroundings. It seemed to be a small town, maybe a population of 200? They had a small grocery store, a mall, a theater and lot of forestry parks. They continued on and came to the residential area of the town.
He stared out his window until he felt the car begin to slow and pull into one of the driveways.
The house they pulled into was fairly big with gardens all around it. An iron gate wrapped around the entire estate. It had two storeys plus a basement underground.
"Nice house." He commented as she pulled into the garage.
"Thanks," She said turning off the car "My dad built it. A year or two before he died."
"Wait... I thought your parents were travelling?" Gabriel said following her out of the car.
"And I thought you were an angel who knew everything." Katherine replied with a sarcastic tone.
Gabriel raised his eyebrows at her "Fine, I don't know everything about you. I was trying to protect your privacy by only reading what I needed to know to find you."
"I appreciate that." She said opening the side door to the house. "Mom remarried another hunter. I'm supposed to call him 'Dad' but I don't."
As they walked into the house Gabriel thought about this, not only did she have a bad relationship about her career choice she had a bad relationship with her parents all around. She had family issues like him; she was fighting an inner war. Whether she knew about that or not was irrelevant. Gabriel could almost guarantee that she didn't want to become a hunter. She could do so much more with her life! Why waste it on a life that would eventually get you killed?
"Are you coming?" She called from further in the house.
Pulled from his thoughts he flew to where she was.
He appeared right beside her and she jumped about foot in the air.
"What the hell??!" She cried pressing a hand to her chest "Where the hell did you come from?!?!?"
"Depends on what you mean, I came from heaven originally." He said with a smirk. "But recently I just came from down the hall." He finished simply taking a great joy in her confusion. She was more fun than the last hunters he'd dealt with. They'd been fun when they hadn't known he was an angel and had thought he was simply a trickster.
Of course how they all thing you're dead. They think that you're dead and you have no friends. His mind whispered cruelly. He sighed, all the joy now gone from his face.
"Hey are you okay?" Katherine asked.
Gabriel looked up "Yeah, yeah I am fine."
"Okay... Well I'm hungry. Do angels eat?" She said leading the way to the kitchen.
"We can eat if we choose. We don't have to." He replied following her.
She looked at him "A simple yes or no would've sufficed!"
"Why does everything have to be simple with you humans?"
"Why does everything have to be difficult with you angels?" Katherine shot back.
"Touché." He said with a playful grin.
Katherine gave a grin back and turned to the fridge "Okay we have fruit, veggies, pizza.... Yogurt?" She looked up at him for his answer.
"Anything sugary?"
"Um... Doesn't look like it."
Gabriel shrugged "Don't worry about it then. You eat." He walked away and sat on a stool at the island in the middle of the kitchen.
Everything in the kitchen was made of iron. Except the fridge and cupboard doors. The fridge was stainless steel and the cupboards wood. It was basically a monster proof house.
Strangely though there was no protection against demons or angels. None that he could see at least. Maybe they hid those ones for when they had company. Or they just didn't have any. Well demon protection he was sure they would have but angel protection... Well most hunters didn't even think they existed.
"What's on your mind?" Katherine asked sitting across from him with a yogurt container in her hand.
"Just admiring your protection methods. You don't have anything for demons." He commented.
She gave a sneaky smile "That's what you think."
Gabriel raised his eyebrows "Care to show me?"
"And why should I?"
"Because I am supposed to take care you now."
They stared at each other for a few minutes, not saying a word. Then she rolled her eyes and stated "I don't need you to protect me okay? I have been doing just fine on my own so far!"
"Right, exactly so far. Someone upstairs thinks you need help now." Gabriel said becoming very frustrated with the young hunter.
Apparently she was fed up too; she stood up saying "I'll be in my room. I'll call if I need any... assistance!" And then she was gone.
Gabriel stared at the ceiling and whispered "Lord give me the strength not to strangle her in her sleep."
"Gabriel?!?!" A voice said behind him.
He spun around to see Castiel stand there. "Hey Castiel! Shouldn't you be with your boyfriend and his brother?"
Castiel ignored his comments and stuttered "I-I thought Lucifer had killed you!"
"So did I man! I even experienced it, first hand! Not pretty, I really don't recommend it." Gabriel said lightly "Someone brought me back to take care of the brat upstairs."
Castiel looked at the staircase and smiled "Apparently you two haven't hit it off too well."
"What makes you say that?"
"Because she's upstairs and you are down here."
Gabriel rolled his eyes "I'm not looking to be best friends with her, nor fall in love with her as you have."
Castiel laughed "We'll see." And he left.
"That's it," Gabriel stated flopping onto the couch "No more praying."
Music began blasting upstairs and Gabriel resisted the urge to fly away. He had to stay here and take care of her. Not that she appreciated all that he was giving up to do this. He should be out celebrating with his new found life! Instead he was stuck here listening to some obnoxious music, looking after an ungrateful stupid little girl.
He also resisted going upstairs and telling her to turn the noise off. He would not give her the satisfaction of knowing that she'd annoyed him.
Sitting up he began going through her cupboards searching for some kind of food.
She hadn't been lying when she'd said that she had nothing sweet. The family must be some kind of health nuts. He hated those people! They had no idea how to have fun.
The music suddenly quieted upstairs and Gabriel turned around and stared at the staircase. No one came down but hear movement upstairs.
"She probably got sick of that damn music too." He muttered.
Sure, usually he loved the new style of music but that had honestly just been noise. He wasn't even sure what this society classified it as!
However, he still became worried. There was noise upstairs but it was also to quiet for his liking.
He flew up the stairs and into what he found was her room. He knocked on the door "Katherine? Are you okay in there?"
There was no sound on the other side except the grunting of two different people and the sound of furniture being turned over.
Gabriel stood there for a second. Did he go in and help, or let her prove that she was capable?
"You help!" He said to himself aloud "You're her angel now, whether she wants you or not." With that said he pushed open the door and saw Katherine pinned against the wall with a knife at her throat. The person holding her there sent a shock down his spine. It was his brother, Lucifer. The one who'd killed him.
Lucifer paused as the door opened. He turned to look at Gabriel and Gabriel could see that his vessel was not holding up very well and still he emanated ultimate power.
"Gabriel! I thought I'd killed you!" He said surprised.
Feeling brave he walked up and said "You did, but I've been brought back to protect this one." He pointed at Katherine who was staring wide eyed at the angels.
"Well then, I'll have to remedy this situation." And he disappeared.
Katherine stood there with her palms pressed against the wall, her brown eyes wide with fear and her auburn hair was wild from the fight. "What the hell just happened!??!"
"The devil paid you a visit." He replied simply, as if it were the most normal thing to occur.
"The devil? THAT WAS THE DEVIL!?!?" She cried out, her growing even bigger if that was possible.
"Well yeah. More like Lucifer though. My damned brother." He paused "Pun not intended..."
"Wait! So what you're telling me is that those myths about the angels falling from Heaven and Lucifer rebelling... Is real?!?!?" She cried in disbelief.
"In a nut shell... yes that is the best way to explain it." He paused for a moment and said "He'll come back no doubt about that." Again he paused broke into a grin and said "We should go get something to eat."
"WHAT?!?!" She screamed "Lucifer just dropped in my bedroom and tried to kill me and you want to go eat?!?"
"Don't you think a burger would go good right now?" He said with a grin.
"You're unbelievable!" She said angrily.
Gabriel winked and walked out of the room.
