Chapter 6

Katherine

“What do you mean?” Emilie asked as they hurried down the hall.

Katherine teetered from side to side awkwardly “Well I may have sort have done something I shouldn’t have... I made a bad deal and now I don’t know how to get out of it.”

Emile raised an eyebrow “Shouldn’t this be for your angel?”

“He already knows and I worry he is going to do something stupid... We need to work this together.” She replied with a little eye roll. Gabriel was great and all but she was used to taking care of herself, she didn’t need him to take care of her.

“Okay... Well what is this deal anyway?”

“I’ll tell you later.” Katherine said as they entered their socials classroom.

“I hate you.” Emilie whispered with a frown following her inside.

Katherine turned around and grinned, “No you don’t.” She took her seat at the back of the class and pulled her books out of her bag and onto her desk.

Emilie took her seat beside her and leaned over “You tell me what is going on!”

“I will, but there are too many ears here. I’ll tell you after class, when we’re alone.”

Her best friend huffed and sat back in her seat, lazily pulling her textbook and binder out of her bag. “I can’t believe you are going to make me wait!”

“Get used to it. Look, it is bad and I can’t have anyone else hearing. Trust me on this Em, it’s worth it.”

Emilie rolled her eyes “It better be.”

She grinned and turned her head to the board where her teacher, Mr. Bradbury, was beginning to write notes for us to copy down on the board.

They were learning about the World War II and the impact it had on the world. It was an interesting topic but today she found her eyes drooping and her head was feeling foggy.

She placed a hand on her forehead and shook it subtly, trying to clear it. It didn’t help at all and Katherine felt her vision going foggy as well.

What was going on?

“Kate? Kate are you okay?” Emilie asked quietly placing a hand on her shoulder.

Slowly she nodded as her head at last cleared. She began to refocused on the lesson, but not before she heard the flutter of wings and a menacing giggle from the door.

Shaking her head she cleared all her thoughts and didn’t think of anything throughout the rest of the class.

When class was finally over she packed up all her stuff quickly and almost ran out of the classroom. Emilie was close behind. Yelling to slow down and what the hell was the rush. Her rush was that she wanted to get to the next class without seeing the Devil or any other creature that could kill her.

“Katherine! Katherine slow down! We have five minutes!” She said, huffing, almost sprinting.

She didn’t slow her pace. Something was in the school and she wasn’t taking any chances that it might find her.  She was not going to die today, that was not part of the game plan.

Coming to her next class without any casualties she waved goodbye to Emilie as her friend gave her a look and continued on to her next class.

Sitting down at her normal spot at close to the door she unloaded her bag and waited.

Tom came in and took his seat beside her, leaning over and giving her a forehead a quick kiss, “Hey I missed you this morning.”

Katherine rolled her eyes “You are such a dork you know that? I did see you this morning!”

He smiled “Yeah but that was an hour ago! Do you know how long that is Kate?”

She gave his arm a small punch and said “Don’t become a clingy boyfriend on me now Tommy.”

Tom grinned and looked forward at the board.

She didn’t look ahead right away. A figure by the door caught her eye and she turned to see Gabriel standing there giving her frantic signs to come over. She looked at him, lifting an eyebrow. He didn’t care, just motioned with his hand more furiously.

Sighing she stood up and went outside.

He took her around the corner and said “I know this is sudden but we have to leave. Lucifer is here, I can feel it! Katherine, he may be ready to make his move.”

Katherine stared at him in sadness, “I knew it... I thought I heard him.”

Gabriel gave her a stare and looked away, “Come on, if we hurry we can make it out of here without him realizing we’ve left.”

She stared at him in surprise “I can’t go. I have to stay here; I have to go to school Gabriel! This isn’t an optional activity!”

“Sure it is! I see kids skipping all the time!” He protested with a confused look “No one would even notice you are gone. Look my main duty is your safety and I deem this environment way to dangerous for you to be in.”

Katherine rolled her eyes “I am not one of those people! I am not going to skip school. Why don’t you stick around and watch over me? That could work right?” She suggested with a smile.

She watched him crumble, she wasn’t sure why he suddenly gave up so easy but she was glad because it meant that she had won.

“Fine, if Lucifer finds you, just say my name and I will be right there.” He reached out and took her hand in his, “I promise.”

Katherine stared into his golden eyes and felt her feet being swept out from under her. Why did her affect her in this way? Whenever he stared at her this way she felt as if she knew him... but that was impossible wasn’t it?

“Thank you.” She whispered and slowly pulled her hands from his and walked back into class. Sitting down at her desk she stared down at her notebook. Not able to focus on anything except the disappearing warmth in her hands.

The lesson started but she wasn’t paying attention. There was nothing more interesting than trying to stay away from Lucifer and thinking about her angel.

Class ended without her even noticing what had happened.

Tom patted her shoulder and she jumped, startled.

“You okay?”

“Yeah, just spaced out sorry.” She replied quietly piling her things back into her bag and shouldering her sac.

Tom walked her out of the classroom and then waved goodbye as is Football buddies called him over to them. She watched him run over, standing in the middle of the hallway.

She watched how the light from a window hit is brown hair and twinkled in his green eyes. She waited for the normal leap of her heart whenever she saw him, but it didn’t come.

Shaking her head she turned away and ran right into someone.

“I’m so sorry!” She muttered looking up and then gasping taking a step back.

Lucifer stood before her. His blonde hair ruffled a little and his dark eyes glinting with joy, “No worries darling. I am glad I have found you. We have some unfinished business you and me.” He said with a small laugh.

Katherine backed up a little and said in a small voice “Gabriel!”

She heard the flutter of wings and suddenly felt a firm form behind her. He had come just like promised.

Lucifer looked at Gabriel and said in a venomous voice “She is mine again! You have failed once again my dear brother!”

“No, you will fail. I won’t let you take her again!”

Again?

Lucifer laughed “Is that so? And what are you going to do about it?”

Gabriel had a smile in his voice as he replied with “Take her away.” She felt something soft close around her face and felt Gabriel’s arms wrap around her waist. She was lifted from the ground and carried from the school. She watched as the town flew beneath her and suddenly she was home again.

“We have to go back! He might kill people because of us!” She cried as soon as they landed.

Gabriel gave her an annoyed look “You’re welcome for saving your damn life again!”

She sighed and looked in the direction of the school, “He’s never going to stop is he?”

“Nope, that’s why we are going to make him stop.” Gabriel said and then turned to go inside.

She followed him and said “So what is with this again stuff?”
