Chapter Three: The Moonlight Howl.

Half a mile away, standing in couples all over a massive, rocky hill, were the participants in the howl, standing in the light of the glorious half-moon. Around the mountain prowled the other wolves who had yet to find parteners to howl with, walking about, or talking in small groups in corners.

First one wolf raised his head and let loose a howl, not a war cry, nor a cry of grief, nor even a howl of greeting, but more of a musical howl, a sound into which the howler put their entire spirit, every emotion they could muster! Then his partener stepped up and added her howl to his, causing their howls to mingle, and then to catch together like pieces of a puzzle and form a true, whole song.

Taking the signal all of the other partners gathered on the hilltop joined in, each totally consumed in their and their partner's song, letting nothing else reach them.

Out at the edge of the area in which the Howl was done came more wolves, all from the same pack, dozens of wolves, all pacing past the bushes in which Salty, Ace, and Mooch were hiding, watching, and waiting their chance . . . well, they liked to think that they were waiting their chance, though strictly speaking what really what would have happened had a chance come around was up to debate.

Suddenly two young female wolves appeared, pacing up the edge of the hillside, talking animatedly in a rather gossipy way . . ." Omega alert!" Called Ace, jumping down, Mooch leaped after him and squashed him flat, and Salty halped right over both of them, landing on the edge of the trail.

The two other wolves fell silent as they passed." Hey" Said Salty weakly - they ignored him, though one swished him smoothly with her tail as she passed.

He shook his head." Hey!" He called now, slightly louder.

They turned and looked at him, he was at a loss for words . . . He glanced back at Mooch and Ace and shrugged." That's all I've got!"

The two young wolves laughed softly at him and turned away, continuing on around the hill." Wow, this is a new feeling." Salty sighed.

Suddenly Humphrey appeared." I saw the whole thing guys!" He said, professionally keeping his laughter quelled." Um, I cannot believe they didn't just follow all over you. When you yelled 'hey'! Uh, I thought you'd cinched it right there." He put a paw on his friends shoulder and sat down.

"So." Salty said." You think you can do better?"

"Oh, please!" He chuckled, pacing out to the edge of the cliff overlooking the trail." The next girl that comes up the hill, she's mine!"

Perfectly on que, Kate appeared, Lily following. Slowly she paced through a beam of shining moonlight, throwing her dark golden fur about her face, the pink flower in it giving her the perfect touch.

"Whoah." Salty muttered, stepping up behind Humphrey." I've never seen her look that good!"

"Whoah." Mooch agreed.

Humphrey hopped to his feet and turned around." I'll be right back!" He called, pacing forward, but they were too quick, and jumped in front of him.

"Hey!" Mooch said." Where, do you think you're going?"

Ace stepped up beside him and put a paw on his shoulder." Humphrey, you know the rules, you're not allowed to howl with her, she's an Alpha."

Mooch stepped up on the other side of him." We can eat together."

Ace nodded and finished for him." But we can't, ya know, howl together."

Humphrey shrugged them off and stepping backwards glanced down at Kate." Guys, I know, I was just . . . kidding."
