Prologue.
Jasper Park, Canada.
There aren't many places on earth which we can see once and then, throughout our lives, keep looking back to.
Jasper Park was the masterpiece of nature's works in a thousand ways, all the way from the thousand glistening waterfalls that feel down the cliffs of the mountains that made up the land, to the beautiful lilies that lit up the pools of it's many rivers and streams. And it was never so beautiful as it was now: in mid Autumn.
Of the many species that lived in the Parks streams, forests, and mountains, the most feared, most powerful, and most beautiful; were the wolves.
Six of these wolves would have especially caught one's attention on this particular day.
The first four were the four young friends: Mooch, Salty, Ace, and Humphrey, all low ranking, friendly pups. Today they had invented the worlds most recent sport: Log sliding.
It had originally been Humphrey's idea, though that wasn't un-usual: Earlier that day he'd spotted a hollow log that had been split straight down the middle, and he'd instantly gone and checked it out, and then his over-active mind had started thinking of something to do with it. . . .
And now he and his friends, having pushed the log up to the top of a hill in the forest, were excitedly preparing to do a 'test run', laughing as they pushed the log into position.
"Time to ride the slide and taste the wind!" Howled Humphrey dramatically, giving the log a final shove into position. Perfect.
"Humphrey, you are totally genius!" Tossed in his best friend, Salty: A thin, scraggly, grey furred wolf pup.
Humphrey grinned and hopped up to the front of the log." Come on, let's do it!"
The other three took their places, little Ace taking the back end of the log, Salty placing himself right behind Humphrey, and massive Mooch hopping in front of Ace. Humphrey laughed to himself, exhilerated by the thought of what he was about to do.
"Air wolf!" They called together, taking their feet off the rocky ground and howling with delight.
Nothing happened.
Humphrey sat down, really dramatic." Guys" He said, but his friends just kept howling." Guys!" He glanced back at them, the log was balanced right on the end of the rock they had placed it on." We're not mov -" Just that instant the log shifted violently forward and the word ended in a drawn out howl as they sped forward down the hillside.
Only a few hundred yards away, two other wolf pups were playing.
"This caribou is mine!" Said Kate, leaping out of the tall grass and landing behind her sister, Lily.
Lily yelped and spinning around sped away into the grass, her white tail disappearing behind her." Kate, I'm not a caribou, I'm your sister!" She cried as Kate pursued, right on top of her.
Suddenly Kate vaulted off a fallen log and threw herself through the air, flipped once, and landed perfectly in front of Lily who dropped to the ground with another surprised yelp." Got ya!" She cried happily, she was going to be the greatest hunter the pack had ever seen!
Lily jumped up and turning, ran to the side." Omega's don't play like this!" She complained, glancing back to see Kate leap forward in pursuit, and vaulting off of another log and land, running, beside her.
