Chapter Seven: A Howl in Triumph.

Back in Jasper Lily was teaching Garth how to howl.

They stood facing each other on a massive granite spire that stuck up above the forest, way out on the isolated border of the Eastern and Western packs.

He raised his head and let out his screeching, screaming howl, it echoed about the forest and rolled away . . . Lily winced, glad that they had chosen a nice and isolated spot to do this, and pushed an unconcious bird to the side.

Garth sighed and looked uncomfortably down at the squeaking little bird . . ." I know, it's not very good is it?" His pride seemed to fall to dust and he glanced up at Lily, feeling almost afraid.

"Well . . ." Lily trailed off, not sure what to say, not wanting to offend him.

Miles and miles away the Canadian Express was speeding through the dark forest, bathed in a silvery bath of moonlight.

Humphrey laughed, rearing up on his hind legs in front of Kate," That was so awesome!" he exclaimed," You with the snowballs!"

Kate laughed as well." And you with that little bear, and the snowball fight, it was so cute!"

They leapt about the tiny room, stacked with bales of hay, laughing as the re-acted their trip of the past few minutes," But then you with the log!" Kate exclaimed, looking up at Humphrey, still surprised.

"Oh, the look on your face was so good!" Humphrey laughed.

Together they turned and leaped up on top of a stack of hay bales," And then we!" Together they leapt forward and immitated their fall into the train car, laughing hilariously.

Together they lay there, upside down for a moment, laughing till their sides hurt. Finally Humphrey turned to Kate, still chuckling," You know! We make a pretty good team!" he said," Kate and Humphrey! World adventurers! What do you think?"

Kate laughed softly and smiled," I think you're crazy."

"You think I'm crazy, oh," he grinned at her," no, I'm tellin you! We're onto something here," He rolled over and sat down," hey, stick with me pup and we'll go places!" He winked down at her.

She nodded, her heart filled with joy at just being . . . with him." Well, I'll keep that in mind." She said, smiling.

Lily pushed the eighth unconcious bird to the side and sighed." All right, take a deep breath," she said, putting her paw on his chest, feeling him tense up and look down at her paw, then back up into her eyes," and howl from right here." He smiled up at her, and with a rush of impetuosity she added," And I'll join in!"

The train suddenly made a sharp turn and whistled out onto a lake, running only a few feet away from the sparkling water. Together their eyes turned to the glorious full moon hanging in the sky, pouring its beautiful silver light all over them . . .

Slowly Humphrey stood and paced over to the door of the car, sitting down he raised his dark grey head to the sky and began to howl . . .

Kate stared at him for a moment, entranced by his voice: it was the perfect voice, the voice she had been waiting to hear for all her life . . . Suddenly she shook herself, her mind taking over her heart, and sighed, looking up at Humphrey, howling in a way that now only felt sickeningly heartbreaking." Humphrey . . ." she said softly," What are you doing?"
