This Crazy Life
Chapter 13: These Summer Rays
I had been avoiding Ray all I could but it was kind of hard. I thought she was the type of party girl that went out every night but I was wrong. She stayed in all day unless she had classes. She ate popcorn and ice cream all day while watching old movies or listening to music from the 80s.
I had went to the main desk and complained.
Ray hadn't said anything about it and hadn't started packing or anything so they might not have told her.
I had went out to the grocery store to get some essentials for the refrigerator.
When I got back I went into the kitchen put everything in the fridge and set the bread on the counter.
I had half turned around when I heard a voice.
I jumped and turned around to face Ray standing in the doorway.
"I'm really not as bad as you think." she said, leaning on the door frame.
"Really? Because you didn't lead on that way." I said sitting down on a stool at the island.
She came and sat in front of me on the other stool.
"That wasn't me," she paused.
She looked at me and I nodded at her to continue.
"I thought you were going to be nasty, honestly. I thought you were something that is the exact opposite of the actual you." she said, looking down at her hands.
"I thought I would play up to how you supposedly were. I was wrong and I'm sorry." she glanced up at me through her hair.
I sighed.
"You know you should get to know someone before you judge them." I said.
"I know, it was a big mistake." she said, a tear ran down her cheek.
I reached over and swept the tear from her cheek.
"It's alright. How about we just start over, okay?" I said, lifting her chin up to look at me.
I put my hand out. Ray took it in hers and we shook.
"I'm Claire."
"My name's Amelia but you can call me Ray" she smiled.
I smiled and let out a small smile.
I stood up and she did too.
"Well I better go sort some things out." I said, gesturing towards the door.
"Really?" she asked, her smile getting even brighter.
"Yep." I said.
"Thank you!" she said, embracing me in a tight squeeze.
"No problem. I'm glad we got this sorted out." I said, hugging back tightly.
***************
Things with Ray were going smoother.
I was seeing Chris every other weekend.
Summer was in a month.
I was keeping up with Aly and Danielle.
Things were going pretty good.
The only thing that was wrong was that I didn't feel at home when I was at this new college.
My grades were falling drastically and for some reason I was homesick for New York.
This year and this year only was covered by a scholarship.
This summer I was hoping to apply for the fashion university again. I want to get in so badly.
One more month. I thought. Three and a half weeks. I can make it, it's gonna be okay.
The truth is I'm scared out of my mind. I am freaking out. Sure there's only a month left, but what about after summer? What if I don't get in again? What then? I'm scared out of my wits.
Everyone is telling me to calm down and relax but there is no way I can. They're not in my life right now. They all have perfect lives and I don't! I'm stuck.
**************
This is it. I'm free! I'm jumping in my seat as Chris and I are driving home. I push away the fear and all doubts. I have two and a half months. I'm not going to worry about it.
**************
"Come on, please? I need your help." I whined.
"No. I'm not going to go look at swimsuits with you." he said, crossing his arms.
"Pleeeeaaasseee." I pouted.
He rolled his eyes at me. I crossed my arms as well.
"Don't you dare start giving me the silent treatment." he said, uncrossing his arms.
I stuck my nose in the air.
"Claire, stop that. Let's go get some ice cream." he said, placing his arm around my shoulders.
I turned and went into the shop that I wanted to drag Chris into but had refused.
I marched to a rack of swimsuits. I started going through the suits.
I saw from the corner of my eye that Chris was lingering in front of the store.
I smiled.
But glanced at him to see him looking at me.
I dropped my smile and went deeper into the store.
I heard feet behind me.
I smiled.
I knew it was Chris.
Chris stood beside me leaning against the wall.
I looked over at him and smiled sweetly.
He stuck his tongue out at me.
I giggled and went back to work to find a cute swimsuit.
Chris pulled out a suit and showed it to me.
I grimaced and shook my head.
He pulled out swimsuit after swimsuit but they all got turned down.
After he put a hideous one back on the rack he said,
"I give up." I smiled at him.
I pulled one last suit out.
"I'm going to go try these on." I said holding the five suits up.
I walked to the dressing room and Chris stood outside of it.
I showed off all of the suits until it came down to two of them.
"Which one?" I asked holding them up in front of Chris.
"I don't know. I'll probably just pick the wrong one." he said.
"Just tell me the one you like the best." I said.
"Fine. Uh. The blue one. No the yellow one. No-" he said before I cut him off.
"I'll just get them both!" I said.
Chris smirked at me. I stuck out my tongue and gathered my stuff.
