POV// Lisa Schwartz

"Shane?" I say, rubbing his back the next morning.
"Mm... Yeah?" He mumbles as he rolls over to me, his eyes still closed.
"We really need to get this child to Mrs. Retina's."
"Who the hell is that?" Shane mumbles harder.
I roll my eyes. "The Foster care, Shane."
His eyes open wide and he looks at me with shock. "What? Why?"
I laugh. "We can't possibly keep her here. Isn't it illegal? She needs a guardian, as she claims she doesn't have one."
He blinks. "Let's keep her here a bit longer. I don't want to deal with that right now."
I brush my fingers through his hair. In agreement, I kiss his nose.

POV// Cat
"Good morning, Cat. Did you sleep well?" I look up to see Shane making a cup of coffee. "I'm sorry you have to sleep on the couch. Better than on the floor I suppose!"
I smile and yawn. "Aw, no, the couch is comfy."
He smiles. "Good." He takes a sip out of his coffee mug. "Are you excited to go to the store with Lisa this afternoon?"
I think for a minute.
Ohhhh right...
They're going to buy me stuff. Dang.
Like, wouldn't you hate to do that? Like think about it.
Walk into someone's house and they give you free stuff?
Well they are billionaires
And you'd think they'd have a bigger house, with at least another bed.
But why am I being picky? This couch is the luxury I never got.
"You guys really don't have to do that." I  say, smiling at Shane.
"Cat, it's really no big deal." He says.
I sigh.
Lisa walks in with Corny and smiles at me. "Good morning, Cat. Are you excited for today?"
I half smile. No. "Yeah. I just sort of feel bad about..."
"Cat oh my goodness." She interrupts me and flicks her hand. "This nonsense you speak of feeling bad. Take it thou away!"
I laugh and smile wider.
----------
Later that day, the time finally came.
She turns on the ignition. "You ready, Cat?"
I snap my seatbelt in place. "Ready."
And as soon as I know it, we're driving off.
She turns some music on, which I haven't heard much of.

I started thinking about the lie I told Lisa and Shane. My parents aren't dead. My aunt isn't dead--or I think so--I ran away from my parents. Who never spend time with me. Lisa and Shane really care, they seem like perfect parents.
-----------
As we walk in, she holds my hand.
"Have you shopped for clothes at the mall before?" Lisa asks.
I am about to answer, but then she points to a shop called Hot Topic. "Are you into animes or any bands?" She asks.
I remember how I had to pretend like I had no idea what she was talking about.
I even knew who Kim Kardashian was. I had a phone of my own, in my bad at their place, right now.
To look purposely poor and helpless isn't easy.
I made myself look confused.
It worked because she shakes her head fast and says "Never mind"
We walk into Forever 21.
My mom would take me here all the time...
She tells me to pick whatever I want.
So, I did.
-------------
"Your total will be 504.76." the cashier says as we check out.
"Whoa, Lisa, oops I..."
She laughs. "You're a regular girl! I love you."
I wanted to say it back, but I never felt the feeling I did.
