Chapter 2

I heard the door of my room slam open. I jerked up in my bed, my gaze flowing towards them. And there, oh, joy, was standing Joshua, grinning like a madman. I knew he was faking it, even though I have known him for less than a day. I narrowed my eyes.

“Rise and shine, sleeping beauty! Mom sent me to tell you that the diner is…Oh, my. I haven’t seen anything!”, he said, staring at me.

Then I became aware of what I looked like. My hair was disheveled but just in the right way and, believe me - it was rarity. And my dress – well that’s a story for itself. It somehow managed to turn around. The back side of the dress was now in front, and it was pulled up so much it only covered the parts that a decent lady shouldn’t show. Not that a decent lady would show that much skin, but…I blushed immediately, covering myself with a blanket below me. I tried to pull the dress down, and somehow I was managing to do it. I glared at Joshua, who was still staring at me.

“You know, if you say you haven’t seen anything then you should stop burning a hole on my legs! And besides, it’s rude”, I said getting up from the bed, glancing at the mirror to see if I look okay. Joshua smirked, leaning on the door frame, making no sign he was about to move.

“Well if it’s a good sight…”, he shrugged, as I pulled on my shoes. I scowled at him as I moved past him, completely ignoring his cocky self. I saw Joshua tilted his head as he followed me down the hallway. I ran a hand through my hair.

“So, you never told me – why are you so popular in our school?”, I asked, trying to break the silence. The truth is I was just trying to maintain that ‘chitty chat’ as he called it. If I was going to act like his little sister, then I should at least meet him. I examined the pictures that hung on the walls as I waited for Joshua to answer. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of a little boy I assumed was Joshua and some other boy that looked about same age as Joshua. I averted my gaze from the pictures so I could see him, still waiting for my question to be answered.

“You seriously don’t know?”, Joshua asked, giving me that incredulous look I had seen so many times today. When he realized I seriously have no clue, he composed himself, walking faster so he could catch up with me. “Well, I’m a shooting guard in our basketball school team and a baserunner in school’s baseball team. You seriously have no friends at all?”

I shook my head, turning left. “Nuh-aaah”, I almost screamed when Joshua grabbed my elbow, pulling me in the right hallway. Joshua smirked as I stumbled on my feet, still recovering from the shock. Seriously, their house was, like, a mansion that had a labyrinth inside.  I shot him a dirty glare, which received another, even bigger smirk from Joshua.

“Oh, then we’ll have to change that”, Joshua said, laughing a bit when I tear off my hand from his grasp. I needed a moment to realize what he was referring to, before I responded.

“What do you mean? You will not mix in your filthy, long fingers in my personal life, or else I’ll be showing your…your…your underwear to the whole school. I’m sure you have something embarrassing in your room that I could use against you”, I threatened, pointing my finger at him, and guess what – that received another laugh from Joshua. That was so not the reaction I was trying to derive from him. I rolled my eyes, as we were now at the stairs, from where I could feel that wonderful smell coming from below us. At the point we reached the dining table I saw at least five servants rushing by the table, preparing everything for the dinner. I inhaled the gorgeous smell, plopping at the chair one of the servants pulled out for me, giving him a simple ‘thanks.’

“Ah, Amelia, sweetie! You’re awake. I hope you slept well”, Charles said, wrapping his hands around my shoulders, giving me a quick hug, before sitting at the head of the table.

The rest of the family quickly sat at the table, filling the empty seats. Harry was sitting across from me, kneeling on the chair since it was the only way he could reach the top of the table. I laughed as he tried to grab the taco placed on his plate. Next to him was Elizabeth with Charles next to her on the head of the table. Across from him was sitting Joshua, and I was placed next to him, leaving one chair empty. Is there anyone else who should’ve been here?

“So, Amelia. I didn’t want to bring this up now, but…If you’d like to take some free time from school…”, Elizabeth started, but I cut her off, saddened by the thought of my parents. I gulped down the tears, shoving my food in the plate in front of me.

“No, no, Elizabeth, there’s no need for that. I went to school this past few days and I was fine, don’t worry”, I said, reassuringly, giving her the biggest smile I was able to. Elizabeth smiled back at me, stuffing some food into her mouth.

“Alright. And please don’t call me Elizabeth, it’s just too long. And it makes me feel all buttoned-up. You can call me Liz.”

I grinned sheepishly. “Okay. “

“And Amelia is such a mouthful”, I heard Joshua comment from beside me. I shot him a glare. I actually loved my name just the way it is. I wasn’t a nickname kind of a person. “Maybe I can call you…Amy! Nah, that’s too common. Maybe Mia, or Ames…or Miles! Or maybe…”

Yeah, I tuned out. I couldn’t really listen to his blabbering and coming up with new nicknames for me. Couldn’t he just call me Amelia? Ugh, that guy annoyed the hell out of me, and I should live with him.

I glanced around the room, noticing one of the servants smiling at me. I realized it was the one that pulled out my chair before, and I shot him a smile back. The boy looked like he was little older than me, his dark brown hair was sticking in every possible way as he helped one of the maids to steady some big broom. He was very handsome, I might say.

“…Or maybe A-Lee”, Joshua was still enumerating countless nicknames. Jesus, for an eighteen year old he had incredible imagination. I would stop half way through. Annoyed, I lifted my leg from below the table, hitting him onto his tibia. “Ow, I think I’ll stick with Amelia”, he said, wincing at the pain in his leg. I smirked.

“Thanks Joshy!”, I said grinning like a mad-woman, even though I didn’t feel like smiling. Joshua shot me a dirty look, as I stood up, taking my plate in my hands. As I turned around I realized I stood face-to-face with that particular one servant I saw for the third time tonight. He grinned at me, grabbing the plate from my hands.

“I’ll take that”, he said, placing it on top of some kind of a cart. I lightly narrowed my eyes, shaking my head.

“No, there’s no need for that. I can…”, I said, reaching for the plate, but I felt someone’s hand grabbing my wrist, pulling my arm away from the cart.

“Leave it. It’s their job”, Joshua said, still holding my hand. I stared at our arms, and Joshua obviously noticed it, because he quickly pulled his hand away. I closed my eyes, deeply sighing. I turned around about to say something to that servant, but when I turned he wasn’t there anymore. Only the door that led towards the kitchen swung slightly.

Summarizing the day spent with this family, I could say that living with them will be very weird.
