Chapter 1: Part 2
A thick silence had snuffed all possible conversation with the firm slam of the car door. Peering over at her passenger, the young girl saw the usual glare of the lab top's fierce light highlighting her father's gruff features. Frail fingers tapped delicately over the slim computer's keypad, while the girl studied the man's placid expression cautiously. It was unusual. Unable to recall the last time her father had accompanied her to school, the girl gently shifted the car into gear. What could I have done wrong? Naomi knew her father was proud of her, and didn't tolerate anything less than her best in everything she did. She followed the rules, and after entering high school, joined every club and sport she could. She even did community service once a month. Above all, she never lied to him. She never could, since she couldn't ever get away with it. Somehow, her father always knew. When he confronted her though, however distanced he usually seemed, he'd let a tense silence suffocate the room before giving one of his long speeches, much like the present one now choking her as she drove. Yet Naomi knew she'd done nothing wrong. Knowing this didn't diminish the ominous feeling in her gut though.
"Naomi." Startled, Naomi glanced over at her father staring intently at her. His blank expression held no hint of anger or remorse. Switching her gaze to the road, she rubbed the smooth black leather of the wheel nervously in anticipation. "I'll be away for awhile."
Forehead creased with confusion, Naomi felt a rush of relief. She straitened her back, pushing the disappointment swelling in her gut down. "How long will you be gone?"
Scratching his head, Naomi's father glanced back at his lab top, closing it. "I'm not certain, but about two weeks. Think you can hold the fort down for that long?"
Naomi pulled up to the school, leaning back in her seat as she removed her seat belt. "Sure, no problem, Dad. Be safe." With that, she left the car, slamming its door behind her. Naomi scowled as her father drove off, the pit of black disappointment threatening to surface despite her best efforts. Turning away, she strode toward the school, mingling in with the masses shuffling through the two glass doors that housed welcome distraction.
