Chapter 1: Part 1
Peering over the lip of a cold styrofoam cup, Roy sipped the mixture of aureate caramel and milk, warm tawny leaves brushing against his cool hands. The sweet aroma had long perfumed mornings such as these. Its trail traced far back from mysterious districts to its first brew. It now accompanied him today as he lounged on molding park bench, watching passerbys coo at newborns and admonish unrepentant phones. It wasn't a busy morning. Often, there would be ceaseless traffic polluting the park with storms of screaming car horns and savage drivers. Today, however, a placid repose had descended, aside from the occasional roaming city folk. Students of Torburg High often used this route to school, as was the case of the duo now braving an onslot of crisp, tawny blades, fresh from oak trees overhead. With a closer look, he saw that they were not students after all, but men. Draped in loose, black suits, they lugged sleek cases that reflected the early sun's brilliant rays. Unlike most the business men who strode this path, these two neither rebuked slim phones or sped down the cracked pavement. Strolling leisurely about the serene park, their gait sung without a care in the world, a foreign sight in such a park that had only seen those of urgence and stress. As the two approached, Roy set his cup down next to him on the bench, sliding his bag over his shoulder. Catching a glance back at the two men, he walked toward the school, sliding two tranquilizer darts casually back into his pocket.
