The rain was relentlessly pounding on our roof and I wished I could be out in it instead of in my room packing boxes. I took a break and sat in my fuzzy chair by the window. I watched the rain fall, and the little drops roll down my window. Trees swaying and bending in the wind. I love the rain, it's quite calming and just fun to be in. Storms are also my favorites. Everyday sounds drowned out by the pitter patter of the rain or the rumbling of thunder, flashes of lightning. Falling asleep to it at night. The lingering smell of wet grass afterwards. Nature's ambience. I also think the sun shines a bit brighter after a downpour. I like to sit on the old porch swing and just stretch out in the warmth of its radiant glow. It rains so much but I'm not complaining. I love to be outside every chance I get; if only for a few minutes. But listen to me going on and on about this. I can't help it, I like finding joy in the little things. I'm gonna miss New Orleans. I'm gonna miss Dad.
"Ghost have you finished packing?" My dad walks in. I guess I should explain the nickname. See when I was younger my dad always said I was "just the quietest thing he'd ever seen" so he called me a ghost and it stuck. Mom refuses to call me that but I'm cool with it. Actually I'm glad she doesn't; it's me and Dad's special thing.
"S-Sorry i just go distracted." I say in my naturally quiet voice and he nods."Go outside you can finish it later." I hugged him tightly and ran outside barefoot.
Reaching the porch swing, I stepped towards the edge of the wood and stuck my hand out into the storm. I smiled at the feeling of the rain hitting my arm but also grew sad that I'd be leaving this. I lowered my arm and sighed sadly, staring at the rain. As the sun momentarily peeked out from behind the clouds I was hit with how low in the sky it had gotten. It's gonna be dark soon. Sighing again, I turned by back on everything and went back inside.
"Do I have to move?" I picked at my sweater while majorly sulking."You know I don't want you to go, but your mother insisted on you going their for high school. It'll be okay Ghost. You'll make some friends and-"
"And be with the wicked bitch of the west."
"Don't say that in front of her." But he laughed anyways. We ordered a pizza and sat on the couch and he let me watch my recordings. There were some horror movies, regular movies, some tv shows and then Dad's recordings. After about three and a half movies I started to nod off so Dad stops the movie and picked me up.
"Alright missy I think you should be in bed now." If anyone else called me those girly terms besides my dad it'd be in a mocking tone. I wanna be trans but mom won't let me so I settle for girl clothes. Mom brings in most of the money so I have to be nice and do what she says if I want things that are expensive. I really like the oversized clothing trend. It's comfy. I was asleep before Dad even got to my room. Tomorrow is my last day here for a long time. I don't wanna go.
