The weather was crisp in the Los Angeles area. Although the past several winters had been mostly dry, it hadn't stopped the Pacific from blowing in the frigid ocean air across the water and into the city. The sky was perfectly clear - enough for the stars to shine brightly, if it hadn't been for the neon city lights or the thick layers of pollution that obscured them from sight.
You huffed and turned back, casting a glance toward the wayward and exhausted looking person behind you. "Hurry Castiel!" You yelled, before turning back, racing up more flights of concrete steps until you broke free from the parking garage and breathed in the fresh night air. It was so cold, it nearly burned your lungs, and as you exhaled, you watched the small clouds puff away from you, momentarily warming your cheeks.
When the door opened again, the small man stepped through. He seemed to be breathing a little more heavily than yourself, and his crystal blue eyes seemed confused and almost weary to your bright and excited ones. "Y/N," His voice was deep, almost gravely, but it sent shivers through your body that had nothing to do with the cold - "I do not understand the necessity to be so high when it's almost midnight."
"I know, but it's all right. You'll see."
"I understand the tradition," He replied dryly, but still drew nearer to you. "The planet makes a full rotation around its star and most people around the earth celebrate by throwing the right proponents of pellets and mortar to make an aerial display of exothermic reactions."
He paused for a moment and shot you a look. "Fireworks..."
You tilted your head and pursed your lips. "I think you're just grumpy because I made you travel up several flights of stairs and you're exhausted. I'm sorry the elevator was broken, but the top of the hotel really is the best place..."
Castiel shut his eyes and lowered his head, "I apologize Y/N, I didn't mean to make the moment any less special for you. I am still not feeling up to my full strength since-"
You held up your hand and shook your head, "It's alright Castiel." You had recently met the angel. He had saved your life from a Tulpa (was that the word he used?) and you had died, but not so much that he couldn't bring you back - because he was an angel and he had fallen from Grace... And that had been the easiest thing to believe during that week. "Just take it easy. Please, don't push yourself. You really will enjoy this-"
You smiled so widely at him that even though he shot you a doubtful look, he still managed to smile back.
"It's ... different up here." He said after a while of standing in silence. "Before, as an angel - you could see almost everything." He paused, but you waited as he grasped for the words, "Even in the the night with the absence of the sun, it was possible to see light emanating from almost every living thing. I could see the shine from a soul from humans and animals. I could see lights from trees and insects that made all of electricity look like a child's scribbles. Each intricate spark, every intake of breath, or emotion that was felt - I could see it. I was never so blind..."
Looking somewhat sheepishly, he nervously cast his eyes downward, "I - uh, mean no offense to you."
You laughed, and he looked relieved, "I understand."
The angel, now human, looked out at the world, that had once seemed so bright to you and smiled sadly. You could hear the roar of the traffic below you, and smell the city streets of trash and fried food. The shuffle of thousands of feet as they shifted from one foot to another and passed fellow people on the streets. You could hear some people yelling and children laughing - Emergency sirens wailed and dogs howled, and still the world seemed lonely and small.
