Chapter One
Moving should be starting to feel like second nature to me but unfortunately it’s not feeling any different to the first time we moved.
New town, new school and new friends but for how long a time period?
That’s the thing about my dad’s job; we can be in one place for 3weeks to another where we spend 2 years it’s inconsistent.
But for some reason I had a good feeling about this move!
Dad pulled the car up into the gas station to refuel, Mom and I hopped out to stretch our legs I walked towards the washrooms which were located in the store Mom stayed outside.
I came out of the washroom and decided I’d get a soda and some Peanut Butter Cups as they were my favourite. The Cashier was an elderly woman and she looked at me with cold dark eyes that reminded me of dark storm clouds.
“That’ll be five dollars!” she said tallying up what I owed her.
I fumbled into my purse and found I only had a fifty note, she took it and our hands touched as I handed it to her. Her hands were cold and mine felt rather clammy to hers, she looked at me icy and as if she wasn’t quite in the real world.
“You bring danger, you’re cursed! Leave here, you don’t belong. Disaster will be fall you, death shall be your fate!” she said as if the voice wasn’t hers. Then she went to normal “Forty-five change, have a nice day sweetie!”
I took the change and glanced at myself looking a little puzzled, never in my life had I’d ever had an encounter like that. I walked out of the store trying to shake it off as an old lady talking, but the only thing I knew was I didn’t think the old lady had said those words.
I didn’t dwell on it for too long before it was far from my mind, especially since we were at our new house and my younger brother and I were fighting over who got which room. I ended up winning the larger room with the old bath tub and the magnificent view of the hills and woods that lay out beyond the horizon, much thanks to my Mom convincing Chase he could have the next big room which was just down the hall.
“Why do we need so many rooms when there are just four of us?” I asked confused as I leaned against the doorway talking to my Mom.
“Your Father is planning on renting them out to some gentleman that work with his firm” she replied like that summed it up. But that seemed really weird to me when we’ve never had people stay with us before from Dad’s firm, nor had we ever lived in a house this big or this old. I turned into my room and shut the door behind myself, it was late and I needed some sleep the unpacking could wait to tomorrow.
I woke to find the moon was full and the trees outside my window scrapping against my window, nervously I climbed out of bed and walked over to the window seat and sat down on it looking out into the distance. I swear I could see a big dog but as quickly as I saw the dark creature the rain began to heavily pounded against my window pane and I jumped back in fright and hit my head against my four posted bed frame and hit the floor. I could feel blood seeping from my head as my eyes closed. I became unconscious...
Sunlight burnt my eyes as I woke in a daze; dried blood stuck to my face and had stained my favourite silk pyjamas. I looked to see a thick pool of blood on the light stained floor boards I quickly darted into the bathroom and found a towel to clean it up.
I could barely remember what I’d seen but I knew that’d I’d hit my head really hard and badly, after cleaning up the pool of blood I removed my clothes and had a hot shower. The water so hot it felt like it was burning my skin and all the red gunky blood from my cut flowed to the surface looking like red as a ruby, I felt like I was going to vomit but I held it off and eventually there was no more blood to clean off.
I entered the kitchen expecting to find a box of cereal on the table for us to all tuck into, I was amazed however to see Mom had made waffles and that 3 people I’d never seen before where sitting relaxed around my family’s dinner table chatting like they were long lost relatives.
Someone must have caught onto my unease for my Dad looked up to see me looking rather confused.
“Evelina these are my co-workers!” he announced introducing the group, I noticed one of the men looked like he was a year or two out of high school and that surprised me very much.
“That’s Alister and Desmond” said Dad introducing two of them, he must of been about to introduce himself to the younger of the co-workers but the guy got in first as I sat beside him.
“I’m Jude, Evelina!” He said flashing perfect white teeth at me and a grin that could knock your socks off. He was handsome and his handshake gave me a sense at how strong he was; I could only imagine there had to be a six pack under his cotton button up shirt.
I tried to relax and breathe easily, but it was hard to do that when I could feel his staring eyes were exactly on me. I hid my face which was bright red behind my long dark blonde hair only hoping he couldn’t see through it. There was something menacing about knowing he was staring at me with such intense, but there was also a part completely loving the fact I was receiving attention.
I was entering up the old staircase that came off the hall outside the kitchen; I grabbed into the staircase and felt him come up beside me he took my freehand and turned me around to face him. “I look forward to getting to know you Evelina!” said Jude his face looking curious, he’d still not let go of my hand and it felt so dainty in his firm grip. “And I feel the same way with you too!” I replied knowing facing him I could never hide my blushing, he then let go of my hand I walked up the staircase. When I reached the top I could still feel he was looking up at me, I gave a slight wave and we both went in separate directions.
