Chapter Two

“Mom seriously I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything, can I please just go or I’m going to be late!” I answered racing out the car door, knowing I had to make it to the front office before the first warning bell rang.

I opened the locker and shoved my books in running late for my homeroom and then if I didn’t find my home room I’d be late for biology too.

Homeroom passed in a blur and some kind girl showed me where there science wing was.

I entered the classroom feeling uncertain and off balance, the teacher was writing on the white board the class’s lesson plan for the week. “If you’d just take a seat there, everyone this is Evelina Hayes our new student” he said rather gruffly I could feel everyone for a brief second have their eyes shift to me. I noticed the empty seat and took it, I dived into my book bag and could see a girl clearly whispering to her lab partner something I shot my eyes to the front trying to pay little attention to them giggling.

The guy I was sitting next to was staring at me intently I could see it out the corner of my eye, when he noticed I was looking his face instantly fell to his note book.

I couldn’t find a black pen in my pencil case and noticed he was holding one out to me, “Thanks” I said and quickly started to write all the notes from the board above. Class seemed to drag on and I noticed he kept on staring at me eventually I got up the courage to ask him what was his problem, but I didn’t want to sound rude and he was so good looking. Instead our eyes locked and for a long time I felt I could see into his soul, but no sooner had I seen anything he was back to his note book.

“The Assignment is due in two weeks; I suggest you and your partner arrange some dates so you can hand this in on time. I will be not handing out extensions as this assignment will add up to 50% of your final grade, have I made myself clear?” Said the teacher before class ended.

The bell rang and I decided I’d have to at least say something to him “Does tomorrow afternoon sound alright to work on our assignments, let’s say you meet me at my house?” I sounded confident and I hoped it’d draw out his attention. His response was merely a nod and then he was wondering off into the sea of students and I was left wondering what his problem was exactly.

I sat down with a group of girls one of whom was in my AP History class but totally lacked the brains to be taking any AP class in her sophomore year. They chatted amongst themselves about the weekend’s gossip, I wasn’t really paying attention to I spotted him sitting alone in the cafeteria with a book in his hands.

“Who’s the guy sitting over there by himself?” I asked not even realising I’d said anything, but they obviously knew who I was talking about.

“That’s Nate Lincoln!” said one girl.

“He’s totally hot, but also a total loser!” said another.

“He punched Shelby’s boyfriend in the face and broke his nose, he’s so lucky he didn’t get prosecuted!” said the first one again.

“Now Eve is new here she’s free to decide whatever she wants, she doesn’t have to listen to our gossip!” said the girl from my AP history class, she was lucky I didn’t deck her one calling me Eve as I really hate being called that by anyone.

The bell rang and it was then time for English Literature, excitement filled me at the just how great this class was going to be. Only by the time I’d found the room my hope had dwindled as I saw one seat left and it was right next to Nate Lincoln, he looked at me again and then focused on the book he’d obviously been reading since lunch.

I decided I’d had enough of this awkward silence and I was going to do something about it, I took out his pen and sat it on his desk and he looked at it then at me, than placed the pen on my desk.

“You can have it back I found my black pen at lunch time” I lied knowing I’d be using a blue one when I favoured black.

“No you didn’t!” he whispered knowing I’d just lied.

“Why are you being like this?” I asked taking the pen and clenching it in my fist to my fist went white.

“Being like what?” He answered back like a rhetorical question his eyebrows raised.

“Being like you do not even want to talk to me or know me!” I snapped in a whisper, I wasn’t noticing the class size was small or that everyone was looking at us like we were having a lover’s quarrel.

“Just because you’re new or my lab partner doesn’t mean I need to get to know you, you’re exactly like the rest of them!” he snarled at me.

“If you have a problem Nathaniel and Evelina then I suggest you take it outside and stop interfering in my English class!” shouted the teacher angrily, Nate was happy to walk out hearing the teachers words. For me though something dared me to follow Nate out into that corridor and I did just that.

“I’m exactly like who Nate?” I asked confused and frustrated, I leaned against a locker to give me support and to hopefully give me height over him. It however made it easier for him to trap me, leaning in almost inches from face.

“Like all the other students that go here!” He snarled again sounding more furious it was also menacing.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover you need to get to know me first before you judge me!” I replied there was fear as I said what I did but I couldn’t fully understand why, he stepped back to look at me then. My head was side-lopped looking at him from a left sided angle.

“I’ll drive you home tomorrow” He said and with that he was walking towards the halls exit totally not returning back to class like I had to.
