Chapter Eight

I opened the front door and entered the old house to find it in a flurry of unknown people, I peered into the dining room and saw my Dad standing at the head of the table and a map lay out on the table it really looked like they were playing a giant game of battle ship.

My Dad caught sight of me in the doorway and he began to walk away from the group to me, I began to run up the hallway hoping he would not be able to catch up but I was wrong.

Dad pulled me into his study and shut the door, he gestured for me to sit down and I did exactly that.

“I’m aware of your recent behaviour Evelina with that local boy, I’d never really thought I’d have to give you the talk but you’ve left me no choice after all in the past you’ve never acted out…” He was saying and I was left feeling dumbstruck to everything.

“Acting like what Dad? I’ve not been acting like anything?” I replied confused.

“Evelina sweetie normally you treat a move like any other, but this time around you’ve been breaking the boundaries maybe getting too close…” I cut my own Dad off at that, none of it was making sense and my brain was filling up like a puzzle or atom bomb about to explode.

“Getting to close to what Dad?” I found myself shouting jumping out of the seat leaning over the desk at my Dad.

“Too close to the target Evelina!” shouted my Dad back and instantly I fell backwards into the chair.

“You’ve been getting to close to the target Nate Lincoln. You see darling I’m not a big town developer like I’ve been telling you for the past sixteen years, I’m a member of a very elite group called Moon Hunters it’s an organisation that tracks and hunts a special bread of wolves.” Said Dad matter of fact like and I was listening to every word feeling even more confused then when I woke up this morning, all of it had to be fantasy I had to be going out of my mind. Yet somehow I knew it was the truth, “You mean werewolves?” I replied sounding frightened at my unreal suggestion. “Yes darling!” said Dad looking at me proudly, like that was the answer I should have been born to know.

“But Nate isn’t a werewolf Dad so how can he be a target?” I found myself trying to lie when I now knew there was no way in hell Nate wasn’t about to turn tomorrow night.

“Nate’s father is a werewolf and we’ve been tracking him for sometime sweetie, he stupidly lead us here the dumb dog!”

I sat still for a minute working it all out in my head playing back the night of the blood moon eclipse how the wolf had told me to run, it knew who I was and that was the only reason it didn’t kill me but before I could realise anymore my Dad cut me off.

“The wolf had returned to turn its son, as a blood moon is the only time offspring can be turned. Now we have two targets because of the situation!” said Dad looking at me head on, he was scaring me to death.

In all the legends I’d heard about werewolves was hunters were always determined to kill the wolves, it was their code and it was my Dad’s code.

“But Nate isn’t a werewolf Dad he was never bitten!” I forced myself to say in his defence. “You’re a terrible liar Evelina and I’ve had vast information to know that, Nate Lincoln will be a werewolf by tomorrow’s full moon!”

“Well wherever you got your information from Dad its wrong, Nate isn’t going to turn into a werewolf!” I pleaded so hard I felt like I was about to die. “My information isn’t wrong Evelina it came straight from you!”

And with that I realised I’d been played like a Stradivarius Violin.

I’d been bugged, comprised from the start and I had been clueless all along.

“The key is to know your enemy Evelina and I knew you’d fall for him hard but I didn’t realise sending you in for your first mission you were going to get so attached,” said Dad looking at me confused.

“I’m a teenager Dad not a super soldier for the American army, you used me like a pawn for your own selfish gain and you’re not going to hurt him because I won’t let you!” with that I got up and ran out the room, down the hall and out the front door.

I was running for my life to save Nate from a murderous fate!
