"Joey, I'm scared." Nolan crawled up next to me and put his hands over his ears. Even through his hands he could still hear the cracks of thunder outside the window. I could tell because every time one sounded off he flinched and closed his eyes as tight as he could.
"It's alright. They're only sounds." I tell him. We were laying on our sofa, hoping rain wouldn't leak through the cracks on the ceiling of our old creaky building.
"But they're scary sounds." Nolan says. All I do is bring him close and hug him.
That was seven years ago.
Now I'm holding hands with the one and only Peter Pan, in the middle of an orphanage. I'm looking straight in his green eyes.
"Joey?" I hear a voice from behind me. I look around. It's Nolan.
"Nolan."
"What is he doing here?" He looked at Pan in disgust and fright.
"He's... he's not going to hurt you." I tell him.
"But, Joey, he kidnapped you! Threatened you! Almost killed you!"
"I know, I know. But, I think he can change." I smile at Nolan, then at Pan. I see Pan is smiling, too.
"Wh..wh.... What have you done?! You've hypnotized her!" Nolan starts yelling. By this time the other kids were awaking, too.
"Nolan. Plea-" But he cuts me off.
"What did you do? Kill her? Replace her with a clone?" Nolan continues, screaming louder.
"Nolan!" I yell at him. I've never yelled at him before. He stops. I can now see the tears in his eyes. I can almost see the flashbacks, too.
Reading him the story. The note under the carpet. Charlie. The window banging open. The shadow. The other notes. The second shadow. Me getting taken away.
"No..." I say as he runs out of the room.
"Joey...." I hear Pan say.
"I...I've never yelled at him before."
"Let me talk to him."
Pan's P.O.V
I see the horror in her expression, but I have to talk to him myself.
I get up and go out of the room. I walk down hallways and look in rooms. I then hear crying. It's coming from the left of me. I see a door and open it to find a bathroom, and on the floor, a little boy. He's huddling himself up in a ball, just like Joey does.
"Nolan?"
He looks up and suddenly terror fills his eyes.
"You..."
"Me."
"Go away! Go back to Neverland! Stay away from my sister!" He orders me.
"Look, you don't have to be scared. Your sister is right. I am going to change. Your sister is changing me."
He just looks at me doubtfully. I reach for the right words.
"Ever since I met your sister, I've been changing. Her selflessness, the way she cares for everyone, her love for her brother. She loves you so much, and she risked her life for you. And because of that, I got to meet her. I met her out of her selflessness. She's inspiring me, Nolan." I barely knew what I was saying anymore. The words just flowed out.
He just keeps looking at me with that same disapproving glare. Minutes go by.
"Is she happy?" Nolan says to me.
"What?"
"Is she happy?"
"You'll just have to ask her yourself, because I don't know."
More minutes go by, and suddenly Nolan gets up. He pushes past me and through the door. I stand there a while longer, taking in what had happened, and then I leave.
I go back to where Joey was and I see she's gone. All the little kids have gone back to sleep.
Joey's P.O.V
After telling all the kids to go back to sleep, I go outside while Pan went to go and talk to Nolan.
I climb out the window behind me, the same one Pan came through. I had to escape from all the tension and stress. As I sit against the wall of the building I begin to see the sunrise. Its beautiful colors, ranging from yellow to orange to purple, paint the morning sky. I finally let out all the stress through one big sigh.
"Joey?" I hear my name in a familiar accent.
"Pan?" I say back. I then see him climb through the window as he comes out with me.
"How'd it go?" I ask, picking at the grass and gravel below me.
"I don't know." He says, taking a seat next to me.
I just look up at him, to see his beautiful green eyes stare off in the distance. I once thought they were wasted on such a monster, but at this moment, I realize they were gifted to an amazing human being.
