Five: Telling the Parents

"Keil Parker, the doctor will see you now," a nurse tells me and I get up and follow her through the door and down the hall to a private room, followed by Javier and my dad. The doctor is already in there, which is a feat within a feat because they usually take 10-20 minutes to get to the room after I'm told 'the doctor will be in momentarily'.

But then again, I suppose she may want to check this out more than some of the other patients.

"Good afternoon, Keil." Dr. Holcomb says with a smile, then greets my guests, "You brought your dad with you?"

"Yeah. I figured that he may not believe me if he didn't see it for himself." She nods in agreement and goes on to check my vitals real quickly.

"Okay, Mr. Parker, if you want to come over here so you can see it better. Keil, lay down and lift your shirt for me please." I do what she asks as she brings the machine over and plugs a few things in and gets it started. I glance over at my dad and he's looking at the curve of my torso.

"Alright," Dr. Holcomb says after a moment, squeezing some cold gel onto my belly again and then rubbing it around with her magic baby wand, "Mr. Parker, do you see what's on this screen?" She asks, zooming in a little bit and pressing a couple of buttons on the keyboard.

My dad squints his eyes at the screen, "I mean, it looks like two fetuses... but because he's not female, I'm assuming that's not what it is."

"Actually, that's exactly what it is," the doctor tells him, making him look at her like she's crazy before going back to staring at the screen. Javi comes over from where he had been sitting and stands beside me along with my father and stares at the screen as well.

"I'm lost," my dad tells her at last, moving away from me a bit, probably because he had been leaning over top of me while looking at the ultrasound images.

"I'm not sure how, but it seems that Keil is able to become pregnant. I don't know if this is a one time thing, or if it could happen again. My only guess is that somewhere along the way, when Keil was in the womb, something went awry and he somehow was born with both female and male reproductive organs, though he obviously has male genitalia." I shift uncomfortably at her words, mostly because she used the word 'genitalia' and said that I have female reproductive organs while my dad and boyfriend are in the room.

"So you're telling me that my son is pregnant?" My dad asks and the doctor nods, "That's insane, it's not possible even."

"I'm very knowledgeable in this field, and while I agree that it's very odd and I've personally never seen something like this, the proof is right here." She motions toward the screen where the image is still on there, moving around ever so slightly as she adjusts the equipment in her hand, pausing every so often to click around. The heartbeats are clearly visible as the one that looked like a golf ball last week has now turned so that they're both jelly bean looking blobs.

"So, how far along is he? How is this supposed to play out?"

"He's about 13 weeks, and as you've already noticed, there's two of them in there. For the duration of the pregnancy, I want him to come see me fairly often, because I'm not sure if the pregnancy will go as smoothly as most, because of the fact that this isn't typical. He needs to keep in mind that he needs to eat nutritionally and most likely eat more, and I want to get him on prenatal vitamins and possibly a few other supplements if need be, but that will be determined a little later. The main focus is to make sure Keil and the babies are safe and healthy throughout all of this, and when the time comes, we'll need to perform a cesarean section to remove the babies."

My father listens to her closely and nods every once in a while. "And in your professional opinion, what is he supposed to do when he starts getting much bigger? He can't very well stay in school without people asking questions, and I don't want reporters on my lawn."
