Six- Sarah's Song

Life, I've learned, never
follows the path you'd ever
expect. Although rather
annoying, you'll never master
the art of deception quite
like the stars at night.
The rain reminds you
that flowers bloom
on days that you don't. It's
giving up and calling quits
before you even start.
It's laugh when your heart
wants nothing but to cry
but your eyes remain forever dry.
It's the flower that landed
in the barrel of a soldier's loaded
gun. It's hiding stolen sorrow
because you feel too hollow
to enjoy the luxury of remorse.
It's death before life's course
even has the chance to start.

I've had a slight chance of heart;
tied down to my poetry like chains
of negativity and false claims
stating that the world is broken
beyond all words spoken
and all the hearts swelled to
breaking point. I'm starting anew,
with a poem that was inspired
by a little girl who empowered
me without a single clear word.
She taught me the lesson of hurt
and pain
before I even knew how to spell my name.
She taught me life could be magic
and tragic
through the static
of our baby monitors. She taught
me bravery can't be thought
of based on years or mere months.
Life has no free passes or refunds.
She taught me the world is not cruelty.
Thanks to one little golden beauty.

It's been thirteen long years
since I've seen the spheres
like galaxies in your eyes
or the wise
wonder
that hides under
your eternal grace.
The look on your face
in the picture in my mind
remind
me of the days
where the moon wasn't just a faze.
Like the sun, we are always
here. Our tangled highways
of blood vessels and flame
and rivers of honor and shame
prove our existence
isn't just the distance
between your world and mine.
It may take the sun to shine
on me in just the right way,
but the day
we finally meet
will be as sweet
as your last name
spoken by those the same.
Angels.
Labels
given to those who's life was stolen
by the frozen
claws of chance.
Thaw them out and dance
like that's all you'll ever need
to be freed.
