I did just that and the first thing I saw was Lisa crying while Graham (Max’s dad) comforted her. She looked up at me. “Jake!” she cried, but I ignored her. I was too focused upon the lifeless body that lay on the bed in front of me. He was as white as the sheets. So pale in fact, that he blended in with the hospital bed.

“Max!” I said, as tears formed in my eyes. I sat on an empty seat on the other side of the bed to where Lisa and Graham. “Max, you can wake up now” I whispered into my best friend’s ear. By now, the tears were streaming down my face. I couldn’t come to terms with the fact my best friend wasn’t here anymore. Loads of thoughts were running through my head. What if he’s just faking it? What if he’s just asleep? What if this is a dream? As I was thinking all this, I heard Lisa’s voice which made me stop. “I found this, Jake. It’s a letter addressed to you so we didn’t read it. He was clutching it when we found him”. I reached over the grab the letter and read it:

Jake,

I’m so sorry it had to come to this, but I’ve overdosed. Something went on which I didn’t want to tell you about as I didn’t want to worry you. Anyway, I couldn’t take it anymore and I felt like this was the right decision. Please don’t do anything stupid because of this. Oh, and you go get that girl!

I’m sorry,

Max”

Just as I read that last bit, Coma burst through the door. “Sorry we’re late” he boomed. Just as the words left his mouth, Jeremy ran into the back of him, shoulder first like a rugby tackle, sending them both flying half way across the room. I couldn’t help but let out a little giggle. I knew it wasn’t the appropriate time but never mind. I saw Coma jump up as Jeremy pulled himself up, grabbing onto Coma’s arm. Both of their smiles turned to frowns as they too laid their eyes upon Max. It didn’t feel right. Me, Coma, Jeremy and Max were all best friends. We weren’t friends with anyone else. It was just us. Now that Max was gone, what were we going to do? I started crying again. “Whoa, Jake” Jeremy said as he looked at my arms. “What the hell did you do?” he asked, referring to the scratches I had created earlier. I looked at my arms and suddenly realised something. I hadn’t pulled my sleeves down while I was running to the hospital, or while I was running to the room, hence all the strange looks. “Accident” I lied, finally answering Jeremy’s question. He sighed and sat down. Nothing much happened after that. We all fell asleep.
