Chapter 2

It was period 1 – math. As it was 8:30 in the morning, I really couldn’t be bothered to do algebra, and so I was ready to resume to my regular position at the back of the classroom, head down, hair covering my face, scribbling lyrics all over my maths book. Then I’ll go to the front of the class, 15 minutes into the lesson to receive the pink detention slip for not doing the appropriate amount work for the time set. Yeah, as you can tell, this was quite repetitive, but anyhow, that’s what I did. This time was a little bit different though. This time, as soon as I turned around to walk back to my seat, I spotted a beautiful girl smiling in front of me. She was every shade of perfect. As I was admiring her stunning features, she caught sight of me and smiled again. I suddenly felt something shooting inside of me. I felt like I was melting inside. I smiled back at her. It was hard, and I probably looked like an idiot, but I did it. I continued to smile while walking back to my seat.

I sat down and sighed.

“No way man” Max, one of my closest friends, said to me laughing. I turned to him, shooting a look of confusion. He registered my face and laughed again. “Ella Cole” he said, “Really though?”

“Who’s Ella Cole?” I asked him, my facial expression remaining the same. He pointed to the girl I had laid my eyes upon less than 20 seconds earlier. I looked at her again. Of course I could only see the back of her head, but her face was already engraved into my mind, and I was pretty sure it wasn’t leaving any time soon.

Anyway, you’re probably getting bored of this and want to know what was so special about the date. Well, as the day went on Max’s smile faded. I don’t understand, not even to this very day, what was making him so upset and I don’t think I’m going to find out any time soon either. This is because of what I’m about to tell you. When I went home, I put my phone on charge as it had run out during the day. 3 missed calls from the dude. I called him back. No answer. I waited about 5 minutes and called again. Still no answer but I just shrugged it off. I got a call what seemed like an hour later. I picked up the ringing device. “Dude!” I said laughing “How are you man?” I asked awaiting my answer. “Uh, this isn’t Max, it’s his mom” said a voice on the other side of the line. It sounded like she was crying, or at least close to tears. “Lisa, what’s up?” I asked. “It’s Max” she said. She was certainly crying now. She continued to speak. “He’s...He’s dead.”
