Zayn

"So Zayn, tell me about yourself." Melissa asks me. I think of things to tell her that won't give away too much, that way I won't ramble. "Well, I'm 37. I work as a architect for the city. My only child is Alyssa, and it's just her and I." I smile. Melissa takes a sip of water and smiles at her feet.

"You really love Alyssa don't you?" She asks rhetorically. "I'd go to the ends of the earth for her." I say as any other father would. "Now what about you?" I ask. "As you know is just Jack and I, a lady never tells her age, but just for you, I'm 32. I had Jack at a young age," she looks down. I grab her hand telling her that it was okay and smiled. "But yeah, how old was Alyssa's mom when she had her?"

I look away and smirk. "I actually adopted Alyssa. Sure she had a...well," I stop myself. Annie never really was a mother figure to Alyssa. She hated her in fact. "Alyssa has never had a mother figure. I mean, I try to teach her the most that I know about women." I shrug. "I'm glad she found a family like you and Jack." We both look at each other and smile.

Alyssa

"When do you think they'll be back?" I ask Jack. He looks back at the clock and it reads ten thirty. "I don't know, I'm pretty sure it'll be late though. If you're tired you can go crash in my bed." I shake my head and look through the closet of board games. "Twister?" I ask. "Sure!" Jack gets up and claps his hands together.

I roll my pants legs up so I don't slip while Jack rolls out the tarp. "You spin first." I say and stand on the tarp. Jack spins and yells out "right foot red." I do as the actions says and laugh. I spin and Jack puts his left hand on green. We continue our game for what feels like hours but was only thirty minutes. We eventually get bored and watch 90s Nickelodeon.

Jack explains to me how he claims that 'Hey Arnold' was the best show then, but I highly disagree. It was obviously 'The Rugrats'. "Man, it's been forever. It's almost eleven. Do you think I should call her?" Jack asks me. I shake my head. "Whatever they're doing, they're obviously having fun. My dad hasn't been on a date since I was adopted. So basically fifteen years. Let them enjoy it."

Jack nods and smiles. "What if we become like, brother and sister?" He smiles. "That would be so cool." We simultaneously say. We laugh and I get up to make popcorn. I grab the bag out of the cabinet and pop it into the microwave. I look out the kitchen window and notice how beautiful the stars were tonight. One thing caught my eye quickly. It was Mr. And Mrs. S.

They were flipping through some sort of brown book. Pointing at the pages and smiling. They'd exchange a few kisses here and there. Maybe my dad will find that one day. Then all their happiness washed away at the flip of a page. Mr. S snatched the book out of Mrs. S's hand and puts it away. She gives him a look of hurt and sadness. "Alyssa?" Jack zones me back in. "Yeah?
"Check the popcorn."

In all this time I missed half an episode of CatDog and almost burnt the popcorn. "Oh, sorry." I say and quickly open the microwave. I grab the hot bag of popcorn and sling it into the living room. "Jack, catch." I say. The bag of popcorn hits him in the face and he laughs. "I'm still trying out for baseball." I laugh at him and plop onto the couch and enjoy the tv and popcorn.

We hear laughter outside and in walks dad and Jack's mom. "Thank you so much, Zayn. We'll have to do this again." She says. Dad looks at me and nods his head to the car. I say my goodbyes and give hugs. Jack's mom waves at me and gives me a sweet smile. "Did you have fun?" I ask my dad. "I did, Alyssa. I did." He smiles a genuine smile and drives home
