Yea, this kid was really on the fence for me in the Dark Tournament arc...
I honestly didn't know what to think of him. Yes he was meant to be bratty and annoying, yet for some reason or another he seems a little mature to me. Not too much to break his character, but just enough to keep him from being your stereotypical, run-of-the-mill annoying kid in a series. And to be honest, I like that.
So many times before we've seen child characters who are meant to be annoying who I end up hating to no end. *cough* GT Pan *cough*
Renku is different in how he annoys the characters within the show, but not the audience. That's not a misfire on the writer's part, that's just a well-made personality for a character.
