The only thing that stopped Ryder from running was seeing Sonja's heap of blonde hair facing away from her. She was looking by the tracks, a train rushing to her side. Ryder recognized the train, and she knew for sure it wasn't her's. But Sonja didn't even look back, stepping into a train to who knows were, and Ryder barely hesitated to follow her.
Sonja moved to the back, passing sleeping passengers and sitting down near an empty seat. She turned her head slowly, and Ryder saw her face for the first time today. It was a bright tomato red, wet with tears. She didn't bother to wipe her eyes, she didn't even notice Ryder, who grasped the straps of her backpack. She stepped forward, and felt tears brimming in her own eyes, she hated seeing Sonja like this, seeing her shoulders rise up and down so sporadically .
"Hey.." Ryder started, biting back tears just from seeing her like that. Sonja turned her head quickly. Her eyes were a dark hazel, stained with tears, she looked angry, and afraid. Like she just saw someone kick her dog.
"What- what are you..." Sonja said.
" I followed you." Ryder said too quickly she felt hot red embarrassment, " I mean- I saw you were upset, and I, wanted to talk to you. Or- something, cause you were crying and-" Sonja raised a hand to stop her stream of excuses.
"It's fine. I'm fine. Get off the train, you don't have to bring me home." She said, shaking a lock of hair out of her damp eyes.
" No-" Ryder said defensively "It's not okay. Your riding on some random train, crying, and I just can't." She paused, looking at her hands "I can't leave you like that." Ryder sighed embarrassed, and sat next to her. Slowly, Sonja creeped her hand over to Ryder's and held it tightly.
"Tell me what happened" Ryder said, even though she knew the story.
" Emma and Jessica, they- were passing a piece of paper around, and it was asking if I was a lesbian." Sonja started slowly. " The paper was passed to my table, when Umi got it, she gasped, and she started to fold it up and stuff it into a random folder, but I already saw. I ..." She started crying again, leaning her head on Ryder's shoulder.
" I just don't know how people can be so, fuckin' mean." Ryder whispered, more to herself than to Sonja.
" Yeah!" Sonja said, her head shooting up "I don't know why they even wrote about me! I'm not even close to gay! There's nothing wrong with gay people, but, I'm not, I can't be categorized as gay, it's, not fair.. And the math teacher didn't even notice!" Sonja kept talking, she poured her heart out to Ryder, and every other day Ryder would have loved this moment, on a train to who knows where. But she was distracted, she felt sick, nauseous, she hated the train, hated the school. She hated Emma and Jessica, not only because she made Sonja, the one she fell in love with cry, but for making Sonja talk like that. Make her say, what she said. They made her break Ryder's hopes. I'll always love you...
"Let's get off this train, before we get too lost" Ryder said suddenly, almost shoving Sonja's head off her shoulder. She felt like she was stabbed in the stomach with a dagger that was dipped in lava, she wanted to check her stomach to see if there was a hole, a wound, even a scratch. Sonja nodded.
"Thanks." Sonja said quietly. "You're great." Sonja's whispered compliment did no good, Ryder felt stabbed, and as they left the bus, she was claimed by light-headedness, she was bleeding out.
