I waited for him to continue, watching him carefully. But instead of finishing his sentence, he just stepped back and turned around! Adam walked down the hall to the cafeteria doors and pushed them open.
My phone buzzed, and I checked it.
Vanessa: Sorry I didn’t meet u at lockers, will walk w/ u when we leave school 4 home, kk gtg ttyl.
I typed a quick response: Awww ok later.
Feeling sad and lonely, I ate my lunch outside and finished my classes in a daze. When school was finally through, I waited for Vanessa outside the school, at the front steps. I plunked my backpack down beside me and sat down wearily on a step. Then I saw them- Jessica and Adam.
The two were holding hands, strolling together on the sidewalk. They were laughing, and Jessica, Ms. Popular herself, was tossing her naturally-blond hair over her shoulder as she laughed- a high-pitched, annoying titter- at whatever Adam was saying that was so funny. She reached a manicured hand out and tousled his brown hair, trailing her hand down his chest, and I wanted to throw up. Ugh!
Then Adam's eyes found me on the steps, and a devilish grin wove its way around his face. He suddenly leaned down and kissed Jessica, who was in the middle of laughing. She hushed up fast and kissed him back, and I again felt the unbidden tears spring up behind my eyes. Stupid Jessica. Stupid Adam.
I looked at the ground, willing the tears to stay back. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I jumped to my feet, startled. It was Vanessa.
"Let's go, Kim," she said, and I agreed, slinging my backpack over my shoulder, glad to escape Adam's and Jessica's makeout session.
While we were walking on the sidewalk heading to Vanessa's house, I told her everything that happened to me today. She practically exploded.
"You'd better believe that I'm going to hurt that stupid-" she gestured wildly- "egotistical...self-centered idiottomorrow! Who the heck does he think he is? I'll make sure he thinks good and hard about not doing that to my bestie again! That rude, selfish-" She lapsed into rapid Spanish, and I put a hand on her arm.
“Shhh! Calm down- we're almost to your house, and you know I don’t understand Spanish," I pleaded. Vanessa settled down and apologized, and I smiled in my heart that I had such a loyal best friend. We reached her front door, and she unlocked it, pushing it open exuberantly.
"I’m home,” she shouted, "and I brought Kim with me!" Vanessa's older brother, Jose, came up to us and wrapped me in a huge bear hug.
“Ahhh! Put me down Jose,” I laughed, regaining my balance as he set me down.
“What’s up, Kim?” he asked, grinning.
I fidgeted. "Mmm, I don’t really want to say right now. Vanessa will tell you when I leave. Right?”
Vanessa nodded and took my arm, leading me to her room. I plopped myself onto her bed and leaned against the wooden bed frame. Then she clapped her hands.
“Omigosh! I forgot the heartbreak food and movie! Be right back!" She dashed from the room and returned a minute later with a bunch of junk food and a DVD, The Vow, in her hand.
"Oh my goodness, Vanessa! You are amazing, you know that?” I laughed, and it felt good after today's events.
Vanessa grinned. "Neapolitan ice cream, M&Ms, Milky Ways, Hershey's Kisses, gummy bears, and The Vow. Bam!"
I took the tub of tricolored ice cream and dug into the chocolate part, and Vanessa put the movie into her Blu-ray/DVD player. Then we laughed, cried and giggled at the movie, pigging out on the ice cream and candy. When it was done and we were full, I called my mom and told her I was coming home. I said goodbye to Vanessa and her family, happy, tired, and full. Huh, I'd even forgotten about the earlier incident with the letter.
Arriving at my house, I pulled the keys from my pocket and unlocked the front door. I was so tired.
"I'm home," I yelled, "and I ate dinner at Vanessa's!" I made my way to the living room and stopped so fast that I nearly tripped. There sat Adam Smith, with his parents, on the living-room couch. My parents sat on the other couch across from them.
What the heck?!
