 "Umm...h-hi," I squeaked out. "I was thinking, J-"

“Hello? Are you there?" he said. I held the phone away from my ear for a second and then put it back.

“Hello? Hello! Can you hear me now?” I asked.

He started to laugh, and I frowned. What was so funny?

“Haha, I bet you fell for that- this is my voicemail. Leave your name and number at the sound of the beep, and I'll get back to you."

That annoying beeeeeep! rang in my ears, and I hung up. Wow, I had fallen for the oldest trick in the book. I was tempted to throw my phone at the wall, but I stopped myself, deciding to call him again. I pushed the call button and waited. He answered almost immediately.

“Hello? Who is this?” Josh's voice rang of tiredness.

“Hi- it's Kim. I want to explain everything to you because you wouldn't let me earlier.”

He sighed. “Fine. I guess it wasn't fair of me to act like I did."

I was determined to push ahead and get this over with. "Well, you see-"

“Go on?"

“Our parents went on vacation, and his parents wanted him to stay at my house, because his mother deemed me 'responsible.' There is nothing, and I mean nothing- going on between us.” I adjusted my glasses.

There was a pause.

“That’s it? So he was just making a scene? You could've said that before I made myself look like a complete idiot!"

“I’m sorry,” I said. "I would've told you if you'd have listened to me. I should have told you."

Josh sighed, and I could picture him running a hand though his messy black hair. “I forgive you. Is he going to be there tomorrow? I miss coming over to your house like old times."

“He's going to be here for three weeks, but heck, it's my house- come if you want to," I replied.

He didn't answer.

“Hello? You still there?” I asked.

“Sorry...I'm just thinking. Maybe it'd be best if I don't come." His voice was thick with emotion.

“Umm...ok, then." I was disappointed.

“Look, I gotta go; see ya later." He hung up, and I dropped the phone exasperatedly on the bed. I opened the door to tell Vanessa I was through and had to jump away when she fell at my feet. She dusted herself off and gave me an innocent smile.

"Inspecting the doorknob, eh?" I rolled my eyes. "You're such a snoop."

She shrugged and pulled that puppy-dog face. "I'm naturally curious."

"I can tell." I checked the clock. "Let's go to sleep before we turn into zombies."

The next day, I finished getting ready for school. Adam and Vanessa had been arguing about stupid things all morning, and I was relieved when Vanessa finally had had enough and joined me on our daily walk to school. I didn't see Josh anywhere when we arrived at campus.
