Chapter 41: Future Memories

Being back home felt strange without Tom. Estela missed the sound of his voice, his snarky comments and that damn smirk that sent her stomach into a fluttering frenzy.

She hated that feeling, though. The mere thought of being the girl whose stomach fluttered and cheeks reddened when she thought of a boy make her feel sick. She wasn't that girl. She was independent, and no boy would usually make her feel like that, but Tom was different. Somehow, he'd managed to turn her into that girl and she hated him for it.

It had been over a week since they parted ways in the Hog's Head, and she hadn't heard anything from him, not that she'd expected to. But it was strange that she hadn't heard a single word or whisper of his whereabouts. She wondered where on earth he was seeing as he wouldn't be going back to Wool's Orphanage. He had nowhere else to go. She had a bad feeling deep down, and couldn't help think that he was up to something.

One morning during the summer holidays, Estela received two things by owl post as she was eating her breakfast. The sound of Nova, the family owl, hooting softly in the distance announced his arrival. With a large brown envelope in his beak and a small parcel attached to his leg, he swooped into the kitchen and circled Estela before landing gracefully on the counter before her, pecking her hand gently as a hello.

Estela gave him a treat, but was preoccupied by what the owl was carrying. The mere sight of the brown envelope sent a shiver of panic down her body. As she took it from the owl, she spotted the red seal with the Hogwarts crest which confirmed her suspicions of the letter's contents. Her exam results.

Her hands began to shake slightly as she tore the envelope open, and with apprehension, she read the letter's contents, her heart thumping wildly in her chest.

Her eyes scanned the list of grades quicker than a flash, and she couldn't help but sigh a large breath of relief as she read over her exam results once more, just to be sure that she had seen them correctly. The list was as follows:

Charms - O

Transfiguration - O

Defence Against the Dark Arts - O

Arithmancy - O

Advanced Arithmancy - A

Potions - O

Astronomy - O

History of Magic - O

Ancient Runes - O

Divination - O

She was extremely happy with her results and couldn't hold back a smile as she read over them again and again. She was let down with her marks in Advanced Arithmancy, though, but she hadn't expected to get an 'O' in her worst subject. She was glad that these were only mock exams, which meant she would have the opportunity to improve in time for her actual N.E.W.Ts.

She read the next piece of parchment attached to her results and actually gasped aloud as she did so. It read:
