A black feather fell, drifting slowly to the void beneath. An unknown source of light glimmered on each fiber, giving it a navy blue tone.
Dan reached out a hand, letting the feather drift into his palm. As his fingers closed around it, it dissolved into a liquid with the consistency of water yet inky black.
He could feel his body begin to fall. He stared into the abyss, only just noticing the multitude of feathers now falling with him. They spun and twirled together until a shape formed. It was familiar, but he couldn't place it.
Dan lifted his hand and touched the centre of the creature, loving the way the feathers were like silk. Light encased the beast and the feathers solidified into scales. Eyes rolled into its head, blinking once. It's wings outstretched, mouth widening to reveal a set of teeth ready for murder.
Dan gasped, retracting his hand. He could feel walls close around him, suffocating him. The beast in front of him grew in size. Tears pricked his eyes as thoughts clouded his vision. Things he shouldn't think, things he couldn't think, yet he was.
Suddenly, the monster vanished. A person stood before him. A blurry face but two distinct, green eyes shining.
"Don't worry, I'm here" they said. The voice was familiar, yet the sound vanished, leaving only the imprint of their words engraved in Dan's mind.
They reached out a hand, a smile appearing on their lips. Dan grabbed their hand, but it was like oil. He lost his grasp and the ground beneath him had vanished. Dan fell, and he saw fear and terror in those pretty green eyes.
Dan woke up with a start, blinking back tears and trying to calm his breathing. He ran a hand through his hand. Once again, his dreams escaped him. He never remembered them, only dealing with the aftermath as he woke up.
He gazed out the window, seeing colour on the horizon amongst the silhouettes of the trees. Scarlet and blood orange ribbons filled the sky, lone stars faintly twinkling. A lone bird called, the two cries echoing.
Dan laid back down in his bed, staring up at the ceiling. The adrenalin in his blood subsided, and he was able to take easier breaths.
The sun slowly climbed out of the horizon, signalling the beginning of the day. As the light began to filter into his room, the door slammed open.
"Rise and shine Danny, you gotta get up now. We have many things planned for you today" Zoe shouted, leaning against the doorway.
Dan groaned, sliding put of bed. Zoe threw him some clothes, hitting him square in the chest.
"Get changed into them, they'll be easier to move around in. Hopefully they'll fit, they're Phil's and you both are similar heights. Don't take forever!" Zoe explained, closing the door after.
Dan rolled his eyes at the volume of Zoe's voice. He inspected the shirt and pants she had thrown at him, blushing slightly knowing it used to be Phil's.
Still, he took off his clothes and put the second hand ones on, careful to avoid standing in front of the window. They did fit, a much softer and comfortable material than his stiff clothes back at his house.
Opening the door, Dan slightly hesitated on which way to go. He decided it was best to go outside.
He jumped when Zoe joined his side the instant he stepped foot out the door.
"So what am I doing today?" Dan asked, walking by Zoe's side.
"Well first we need to get you a weapon, otherwise you won't last very long. Next we are going to test your athletic skill and intellectual after. After that we'll probably eat then go back to testing the weapon. If you have any questions, it's best to ask at lunch" Zoe listed, counting them off her fingers.
